About John Rofrano
John Rofrano is a musician, vocalist, songwriter, author, VASST trainer, videographer, and software architect. John spent 10 years back in the 1970s as a working rock musician paying his dues in nightclubs and studios in the New York tri-state area. His interest in the early days of electronic music and MIDI programming ultimately led to a career in the field of computer science. After discovering his new passion for videography in 2000, John has come full circle back to his roots of music composition and scoring music for video. When not making music or editing video, you can find John hanging out on at Creative COW where he is a moderator for the Sony Vegas Pro forum, at the Digital Media Network forums where he is a moderator for the Sony ACID and Vegas Pro Scripting forum, and on the Sony Creative Software Vegas Pro forums.

Review: Boris Continuum Complete 7 AVX Named Macworld Editors' Choice

Add vim to your video with new plug-ins from Boris FX

Posted by Michael Burns at Macworld

"Boris Continuum Complete 7 AVX brings over 200 filters to Avid Media Composer on the Mac. Like its sibling versions for Final Cut Pro (BCC 7 FxPlug) and After Effects (BCC 7 AE), the AVX release features several new enhancements, such as an excellent Lens Blur filter that brings a pleasing Bokeh effect to a clip and a video noise-reduction tool that smooths out noise using spatial and temporal information derived from the video clip.

bcc_dv_review

There’s also a new OpenGL particle engine that offers sophisticated effects, such as Pin Art 3D, a generator style filter. With an effect resembling a pin-art desk toy, it uses the colour, luma, and alpha values of layers in the project to define the appearance and arrangement of the particles making up the Pin Screen.

Read the Full Review | Learn More/Purchase BCC 7 AVX | Free Trial

There are a multitude of parameters for controlling the 2D and 3D appearance of the filter, applying built-in lights and cameras, mixing it with the underlying layer and applying built-in wipes to animate the effect. Similarly, the Particle Array 3D filter is a powerful motion graphics effect that can manipulate an array of particles based on graph controls, fractal noise patterns and random dispersion. The particles in these filters can take a number of forms, including 3D Spheres, planes or discs, or horizontal lines."

Review: Boris Continuum Complete 7 AE Wins DV Award of Excellence

Boris brings new filter options and speed to Adobe’s mainstay

By Michael Hanish at DV.com

"One of the largest and most extensive collections of plug-ins for motion graphics work has to be Boris Continuum Complete 7. It’s now available for Adobe After Effects CS5 and Premiere Pro, as well as for FxPlug (Apple Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, Motion), AVX (Avid Media Composer, NewsCutter, Symphony, DS), Sony Vegas Pro, and Sparks (Autodesk Flint, Flame, Inferno and Smoke).

BCC 7 for After Effects, the version under consideration here, contains more than 200 plug-in filters in an almost dizzying array of categories and possibilities. These include 3D objects, particle generators, image restoration and color correction, time-based effects, lights, blurs, transitions and keying. There are 11 new filters included since the last version.

Read the Full Review at DV.com

bcc_dv_review

One of the biggest advances this version makes is the recoding of all filters to take advantage of 64-bit operating systems and OpenGL acceleration. These optimizations yield not only processing and display speed gains but also a great increase in the fluidity of setting up the parameters and previewing the results in a composition. Another interesting and advantageous plug-in design improvement is that many of the BCC7 AE filters can use native After Effects lights, masks and cameras, in either 2D or 3D space. In addition, BCC7’s 3D text generator filters can make use of AE’s native spline masks to create 3D paths along which to animate text, or, with the Extruded Spline filter, a 2D AE mask can be projected into a custom 3D shape. Such asset and feature leveraging makes the BCC 7 AE filter set feel totally integrated in the native After Effects work environment."

Inspirations: A Conversation With Eran Hilleli, Winner of 2010 Vimeo Awards for Best Animation

Winner Best Animation 2010: BETWEEN BEARS by Eran Hilleli

"my graduation film at bezalel academy of art and design. a debt to my childhood and other lives i hope i lived. inspired by words of songs that i admire."

eran

TF: What is your background? Did you receive formal training as a motion graphics artist, or start out with a traditional art background, print, photography, etc?

Eran: i have just graduated from bezalel’s academy of art and design, studying in the screen based arts department. animation in particular.

TF: Can you tell us a little bit about the story behind the video? What inspired you to create this video, and what is the message you hope your audience will take away from the piece?

In your description, you state your video is "a debt to my childhood and other lives i hope i lived. inspired by words of songs that i admire." It is a very powerful statement, and I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about the meaning behind it.

Eran: During the months of vacation before my last year at school i started watching where my mind was going while thinking about my film. there were no big stories mostly places, atmospheres and feelings that swam together. i think it was related to my childhood and my fascination with some worlds i visited in my mind, in dreams and day dreams. for my graduation film i wanted to make something for me when i was a child, not really for me but to that part that was not trying to be smart or sophisticated to that part that just wanted to be there in these worlds.

what ever happen in my film was not carefully planned,

it is one journey i took and wanted to share with others.

eran

As for the songs, it was the Fleet Foxes song “White Winter Hymnal”, mixed with “The Big White Bear” from my friend daniela spector’s song and a bit of “The Devil” a Pj Harvey song. i love when a song activates my mind filling it with images, the songs i love the best are the ones which give me a vivid image without handing me one strict storyline, they open a world for me to keep exploring.

TF: How do you first approach a project, do you typically storyboard your projects out?

Eran: It really depends on the project. for my short films i try to keep it dynamic. i like diving in very soon. trying to realize my vision or thought before even knowing where its all going, this way the visual aspect/style of the film takes part in inventing the story. so i use storyboards but usually dont complete them and dont swear by them.

eran

TF: Your work has a flat, very geometric 2D look to it, although it looks like it was manipulated in a 3D program. What is your process for creating this style? What software or plug-ins do you use on a regular basis?

Eran: in between bears, most of the characters were modeled in 3d, everything else was a mix of 2d and 3d.

this was the first film i used 3d. the characters were all lowpoly and rendered with two shades for each color. blown away with the endless possibilities of 3d-world, i had to put a few rules to keep things simple and in coherence with the 2d world.

these days, for animation i use maya and c4d which i really like, after effects with all the lovely trapcode plugins and colorista, final cut for editing. photoshop, flash and illustrator.

for vj’ing i like vdmx and interactive with processing or max/msp.

TF: Was the music composed specifically for this work? Did the music then influence the work in any way as you created the video, or perhaps the other way around?

Eran: Yes. the music was composed specifically for this film by my dear friend Ori Avni. the music was finished near the end of the work on the film. it was a mix, an intertwine between the music’s progression and the film’s. both influencing each other.

eran

TF: Can you explain your use of color? It looks like you have a very structured use of color in your work, and an established color pallet you are using. It is why I am wondering if you had a background in print design or traditional art, as it looks like any individual frame from your video could easily stand on its own.

Eran: At school i was taught an introductory class to color by Marek Yanai wich is a painter / magician who has opened my mind and influenced me dearly. as he would say,its all about the relationship between colors.

i cant say much about my methodology, i am quite young in this field, but really really love exploring uses of color, this is one of my favourite parts of film making.

TF: Any future work we should be keeping an eye out for? How has exposure through the Vimeo contest affected you?

Eran: Definitely! always working on something.

the vimeo contest was a great experience. i was very surprised and happy. even though i couldn't be there, just from the exposure, i have met many artists and film makers who i would love to collaborate with someday.

Thank you Eran for taking the time out for this interview!

cheers

News: Interview: Studio Daily Q+A: Robert Sharp on Digieffects' Next Steps

Posted January 27, 2011 by Beth Marchant at Studio Daily

robert sharp digieffects"Robert Sharp, who started out making plug-ins for Macromedia Director and was an early developer of Media Cleaner Pro, is now CEO of Digieffects, which he acquired in 2007. Brother of Colin and Jason Sharp, who run ToolFarm (founded by Sharp in 1999), he knows a thing or two about digital video plug-ins. We asked him to tell us more about Digieffects' recent releases and where his company's tools are headed.

studiodaily: You introduced a number of new and upgraded plug-in packages in 2010, which seems to have been a banner year for the company.

RS: We've had a really great year. After the plug-in market stalled in 2008/2009, it's really come roaring back, like most everything else. Most of the plug-in guys I know are doing extraordinarily well. One huge macro reason for that is Adobe sold about 20 percent more copies of CS5 than it did of CS4. So just from those organic reasons, we're going to benefit right there. Apple's been a little quiet on the Final Cut front—and I would hope that the next version will be 64-bit—but the Adobe ecosystem, especially with After Effects, has become so strong for us. We're also seeing a lot more business from Premiere Pro customers." Check out the full interview at Studio Daily.

DE:Noise 2.1 FxPlug version released. Fixes a problem where DE:Noise crashed, especially in Final Cut Express.

And, if you missed it, Video Gogh v3.54 released. Last week.

To get the updates, just install the demo. Your serial number should automatically work in the new version.

Update: Trapcode Particular 2.1.1 Maintenance Release

The free Trapcode Particular 2.1.1 update for Particular 2.1 owners will make your product run even smoother. This new update fixes the following issues:
  • In After Effects CS5, if the particle life for the main particle was set to 0, After Effects would shut down.
  • In After Effects CS5, CS4, and CS3, if you were using a custom particle with loop time sampling for the texture, and attempted to copy and paste either the layer with Particular applied or the instance of Particular, After Effects would shut down.
  • If particles were emitted in a dense grid so they barely overlapped at the edges and were not animated, there were Moire patterns if the camera was rotated around the particles. This has been fixed in After Effects CS5, CS4, and CS3.
Download the update here (the demo will update your plug-in)

In addition, the Trapcode Particular sale ends today. Save 20% on new licenses!

Bran Dougherty-Johnson:

"We still believe that an open, accessible survey of salaries is important in our industry. Recently, some notable visual effects studios have been sued in Federal Court for collusion, and others are now participating in closed salary surveys amongst themselves. As artists in this industry, we want to share what information we have so that we can all gain some leverage in negotiating for ourselves. I hope to continue this survey in coming years so we can build on our base of information."

Tutorials: Lip Sync in After Effects (via Rich Young /AEtuts+)

Rich Young at AEtuts+ posted this great list/resource of lip synching in After Effects, a question we get quite often.

"Angie Taylor posted Lip Sync in After Effects, teaching a task that most animators will be asked to do at some point in their career. The technique in this video (from Adobe After Effects CS5: Learn by Video) automates the process and uses only built-in features of After Effects CS5 (AE 10.0.1). Tutorial files and a text-based version of the tutorial (from AE 5.5) are available if you want to follow along with older versions.

But wait there’s more…

Here’s some recent lip sync video tutorials for After Effects; they’re very similar in using time remapping, basic expressions or converting audio to keyframes, etc. instead of Reshape, CC Split, or other effects:

News: BG Renderer for After Effects Script (via Prolost)

(Posted 01.11.11 via Prolost / Stu Maschwitz)

"BG Renderer is an Adobe After Effects script by Lloyd Alvarez that allows you to keep working while your renders process in the background. It automates the process of launching aerender from the command line, leaving your interactive AE session unaffected. On todays multiprocessor and multi-core machines, even laptop, this luxurious experience comes with little performance penalty.

That, all by itself, is pretty much awesome. But wait, there’s more. The Pro version of the script allows you to set up post-render actions, such as emailing or text messaging yourself a note to announce the completed render. You can attach the log file to the email if you like.

You can also configure Growl notifications. You can then use any of several Growl-compatible iPhone apps, such as Prowl or Boxcar, to send push notifications to your phone.

If there’s anything better than continuing to work while After Effects renders in the background, it’s sitting in a cafĂ© and having your phone tell you that an After Effects render is complete back at your desk.

All of this configured in a beautiful and intuitive GUI that docks in with the rest of the UI and saves with your custom workspaces. You’d think it was a native After Effects feature."

News/PR: New Boris Continuum Units for Sony Vegas Pro 10

bcc sony vegasNew Boris Continuum Units for Sony Vegas Pro 10: Choose Toolsets from the Award-Winning Boris Continuum Complete Plug-In Suite

The following plug-ins are immediately available for Vegas Pro 10:

Boris Continuum UpRez Unit

Get the most out of your SD footage and cameras! The Boris Continuum UpRez Unit converts SD footage to higher-resolution HD formats. UpRez plugs into your video editing or compositing software and becomes a natural extension of the host application interface. The UpRez filter's sophisticated image sampling and edge detection techniques produce a final result that cannot be achieved with the scaling tool in your host application. Every clip is different, both in terms of image quality and content, so just scaling-up the image doesn't take into account variations in light, noise, and graininess. The UpRez filter reads the media clip and analyzes the size of the clip as well as all of the fine variations. Then, using its sophisticated processing algorithm, UpRez transforms, smooths, and sharpens the clip to the desired HD resolution.

Boris Continuum Motion Tracker Unit

The Continuum Motion Tracker Unit includes four powerful, specialized filters that enable you to recover motion data from a clip - without resorting to a separate application - and then use the data in several different ways. BCC Corner Pin allows you to map media to a specific area on a moving object in a media file. BCC Match Move locks the movement of one image clip to another image clip. BCC Wire Remover removes wires and unwanted objects from still or moving images by either cloning or blending pixels together from surrounding areas. BCC Witness Protection allows you to track the motion of an object in a media file.

Boris Continuum Pan and Zoom Unit

The Boris Continuum Pan and Zoom Unit makes easy work of documentary-style Pan and Zoom techniques made popular by Ken Burns. The filter includes a convenient setup mode offering on-screen controls for the size and position of the zoom region along with the anchor point and a preview area that shows a rendering of the final result. Both manual keyframing and automated workflows are supported. The Pan and Zoom Unit offers advanced image sampling with edge detection for smooth animation and highest-quality image detail.

All Boris Continuum Units are included with Boris Continuum Complete Version 7.

News: Digieffects Buena Depth Cue Makes ProVideo Coalition's Top "Must Owns" of 2010

ProVideo Coalition's Ten Editing “Must Own’s” of 2010: If you’re an editor, here’s the second of ten products that you NEED to have! Digieffect's Buena Depth Cue:

buena depth cue

"Besides my NLE, After Effects is my next ESSENTIAL tool to getting my job done. On many days, I spend more time in After Effects than I do in Final Cut Pro or Media Composer. That being said, there are a thousand things I love about AE, but there are a few annoying things that really hamper my work flow, and most of them revolve around 3D. Lighting, for example, is nice, but it doesn’t work the way it does in a 3D application (or the real world for that matter). Also, trying to set up a scene in 3D space and work with it doesn’t work the way that it should, and to be honest, Adobe has taken the ball as far as they need to, because in most cases, if you want that type of realism, buy a 3D application (one of which is on my list of 10 of ‘10), but Digieffects sees things a little differently. They seem to have found a great niche in creating tools (I won’t call them plug-ins) to “fix” things that don’t work right in After Effects, and Beuna Depth Cue 2 does just that, and more.

Comprised of six plug-ins, BDC2 covers almost everything you could need to do in 3D in After Effects, minus extrusion (or Global Illumination, but I’m holding my breath for that one!)."
