Review: Boris Continuum Complete 6 AE from Studio Daily

A very honest review of BCC6 AE from Mark Franklin at Studio Daily.

Most of BCC 6 AE's effects run in Adobe's Premiere Pro CS4, my NLE of choice, and After Effects, an application with which I have a love-hate relationship. There are a few new effects that only run in After Effects. They tend to involve 3D text, or both. The BCC 6 filters that run in AE I find easier to use than many native AE filters. One that was surprisingly easy to use was the Type-On Text filter. While I've used AE's templates to make animated tltles before, this lets you do much more, with less work. It also creates the text in 3D, with a wide array of textures, and pre-made motion files, that far exceeds what you can do in AE alone.

New Product: Digieffects Atmosphere plugin for After Effects

Digieffects Launches Atmosphere Plugin for After Effects Simulates atmospheric conditions such as haze and fog

atmosphereWilmington, NC - January 20, 2010 - Digieffects a developer of visual effects software plugins, today announced that Atmosphere is available for purchase. The Atmosphere plugin for After Effects simulates atmospheric conditions such as haze and fog in your composition.

Layers further away from the camera appear to be more deeply immersed in the haze/fog than layers closer to the camera. This also applies to parts of layers: If one edge or area of a layer is closer to the camera, this area will appear less immersed in the haze/fog than the pixels further away. You can simulate very realistic or very unrealistic types of atmospheric effects using the Atmosphere plugin.

According to Robert Sharp, president of Digieffects, "With Atmosphere we're continuing our commitment to quality you can afford. Priced at only $49, Atmosphere simulates atmospheric conditions like fog and haze in a realistic, convincing manner.

According to Mark Christiansen, author of The After Effects Studio Techniques books, and industry veteran who has worked on several feature films including Avatar, comments "Atmospheric haze is part of life on planet Earth. Keeping track of it in a scene is a big chore. Mother Nature is always up to the task, but if left on your own recreating her effects on 3D layers in After Effects, you'll have an easier time with Atmosphere."

Pricing and Availability

Atmosphere is available immediately from Digieffects and its resellers for $49.

New Product: Boris FX Announces New Boris Continuum Unit: Materials

BCC15 Filters for Creating Realistic Surfaces and Animated Organic Backgrounds

Marlborough MA - January 21, 2010 - Boris FX, the leading developer of integrated effects technology for video and film, announced that a new Boris Continuum Unit, Materials, is now available. The Boris Continuum Materials Unit includes 15 Boris Continuum Complete filters for creating realistic surfaces and animated organic backgrounds.

The Boris Continuum Materials Unit generates realistic textures such as Steel Plates, Bricks, Clouds, Granite, Wooden Planks, and Rock. The textures are procedurally-generated to ensure smooth render at any scale. Each filter provides a variety of animation parameters including controls for the color, width, height, and other aspects of the material. Many of the filters allow users to add 3D detail and lighting to the material surface. Users can apply the materials as realistic surfaces or use them as animated organic backgrounds. All of the filters include presets which make using the materials a point and click operation - even for complex animations.

Boris Continuum Materials Unit Filters

  • Steel Plate: generates a non-slip steel plate look for backgrounds or multifaceted objects. The filter provides controls for the number and size of rivets, bolts, and steel plates as well as the shininess of the surface.
  • Brick: Brick is a versatile generator of brickwork or tiled surfaces with realistic texture and lighting controls.
  • Caustics: The Caustics filter can be used to simulate the effect of light refracting through water onto the bottom of a swimming pool. Caustics is a key element in many popular texture looks.
  • Cloth: Cloth creates a texture resembling tightly-woven fabric. It has many creative uses in the texturing of graphics elements.
  • Clouds: Clouds can be used as a realistic cloud generator or a noise map for other filters in a composition.
  • Fractal Noise: Fractal Noise creates a simulated marble texture.
  • Granite: Granite simulates the appearance of granite or any other type of mottled stone.
  • Mixed Colors: Mixed Colors produces a color noise map.
  • Noise Map 2: Noise Map 2 generates procedurally-based, resolution-independent, auto-animated image clips that can be used as backdrops or as a mask track input for other image clips.
  • Reptilian: Reptilian produces a texture resembling a scaly or spotted animal skin.
  • Rock: Rock is a realistic rock generator featuring 3D bumps and light effects on a rough rock surface.
  • Veined Marble: Veined Marble produces a marble texture with pronounced "veins".
  • Weave: Weave produces a texture resembling loosely-woven fabric, such as burlap or gauze.
  • Wood Grain: Wood Grain creates the appearance of a solid piece of wood.
  • Wooden Planks: The Wooden Planks generator simulates a surface covered in wooden boards, similar to a parquet floor.

The Boris Continuum Materials Unit supports Apple Final Cut Pro, Apple Final Cut Express, Apple Motion, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Premiere Pro.

The Materials Unit is the latest addition to previously-released Boris Continuum Units: Chroma Key, Pan and Zoom, UpRez, Motion Key, Lens Flare, Film Look, Glitters, Optical Stabilizer, Light Rays, 3D Objects, Cartoon Look, Motion Tracker, and Image Restoration.

Despill effectively neutralizes excess green and blue spill without tell-tale magenta or yellow fringe artifacts found in other keyers. Artifacts force you to chose: spend time and money trying to correct them, or settle for artifacts worse than the original spill.

DiffKeyer creates a matte based on difference between two images. For example, film an empty room (cleanplate), then film the same room with actors present. DiffKeyer will create a matte of the actors, as if the actors were shot in front of a green or blue screen. This gives you the ability to effectively key without a green or blue screen.

Three keying engines in one package: YUV Difference, 3d Keyer, and Channel Keyer. Keyer gives you powerful optimized controls to extract precise keys in seconds. Keyer also includes a powerful deartifactor which reconstructs chroma channels to restore details lost to chroma subsampling (4:1:1, 4:2:0, etc.). No more blocky keys.

Creates a light source from a background image, and wraps the light around the foreground image to seamlessly blend them together in a composite.

Screencorrector compares a clean plate, and a solid color (green or blue) and creates a perfect green or blue screen. Excellent for keying with, this processor corrects unevenly lit screens, removes tracking markers, and repairs other ‘garbage’ which makes keying difficult, tedious, and expensive. Tell your clients you can do it.

Why should you buy from Toolfarm instead of going directly to the manufacturer?

This is a question that we get quite often at trade shows and other events. Quite often at these events, we're there representing the manufacturer of the software, so it may seem a bit strange.

Think of Toolfarm as an extension of the manufacturer's sales force. We sell most products for a bit less than the vendor, but it would cost them much more for extra staff, advertising, etc. We both make a profit and it benefits the customer in the end. It's what you might call a "Win-Win" situation.
  1. Because Toolfarm represents over 1,000 products by several hundred vendors, we will give you unbiased opinions. Just email us and we will give you our true opinions on which products would be best for the job.

Quite often, you may not need a plug-in, and we'll tell you that straight up. Hopefully that honesty will bring you back as a customer next time when you really do need to buy something.

  2. We answer the phone. There are several companies who don't use the phone to communicate with customers. It's true. We do. 415-462-1982. Feel free to put us on speed dial.

  3. If you have a question about a product you bought and we can't answer the question, we can get an answer from the vendor for you quickly. What can I say, we have clout!

  4. Our #1 priority is taking care of our customers and handling support questions quickly. We return emails as quickly as possible, usually within an hour or two during the work day.

  5. We often have exclusive sales that we've set up vendors, sales you will not find elsewhere. Make sure you signup for our mailing list for our bi-weekly newsletter, become our Fan on Facebook, or Follow us on Twitter to find out what sales are coming up. They often come up very quickly so I'd recommend all three!

Using Pixologic ZBrush in Avatar

"Patton" on the ZBrushCentral forums posted some early concept work from Avatar showcasing some of the early modeling and design work that went into the project 3 years ago using Pixologic ZBrush.

"I started working on Avatar 3 years ago and was working with Zbrush 2 (that means no subtools!!) I had to work on a fairly slow laptop so that I could work directly with Jim Cameron on the mocap stage. I was really green as a 3D artist but jumped in with both feet, after all this time I still really love the stuff we produced at Stan Winston Studio/Legacy effects."

"I was part of the group of artists that Designed the Na'vi characters. I was responsible for working out Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) Digital sculpts with expressions as a proof of concept for the look of the Na'vi people. I also did the designs for Norm (Joel Moore) as well as Grace."

New Product: Pixologic ZBrush

Pixologic ZBrush is a digital sculpting and painting program that has revolutionized the 3D industry with its powerful features and intuitive workflows. Built within an elegant interface, ZBrush offers the world's most advanced tools for today's digital artists. With an arsenal of features that have been developed with usability in mind, ZBrush creates a user experience that feels incredibly natural while simultaneously inspiring the artist within. With the ability to sculpt up to a billion polygons, ZBrush allows you to create limited only by your imagination.

Designed around a principle of circularity, the menus in ZBrush work together in a non-linear and mode-free method. This facilitates the interaction of 3D models, 2D images and 2.5D Pixols in new and unique ways.

ZBrush gives you all of the tools needed to quickly sketch out a 2D or 3D concept and then take that idea all the way to completion. You can create realistic renders directly in ZBrush with lighting and atmospheric effects. With the many powerful export options, you can easily prepare your model for 3D printing or use within any other digital application.
Because ZBrush users are enabled by its powerful software processing, you can sculpt and paint with millions of polygons with out having to worry about purchasing expensive graphics cards. It is for this reason why ZBrush is used by everyone from art enthusiast to major film and games studios.

RE:Vision Effects, Inc. releases Twixtor OFX version for Foundry's Nuke and Autodesk's Maya (Toxik).

RE:Vision Effects releases Twixtor as an OFX plugin set; Foundry's Nuke and Autodesk's Maya Composite (Toxik) are currently supported. Other OFX hosts will be added to the list of supported applications once Twixtor is verified to work properly within them.

Twixtor raises the bar in motion estimation. Nick Brooks, Academy Award and Emmy Award winner for visual effects says, "Twixtor represents a new touchstone in retiming. The difference in accuracy means that retiming artifacts are either drastically reduced or disappear on the hardest to retime footage."

Twixtor enables you to retime your image sequences with visually stunning results. In order to achieve its unparalleled image quality, Twixtor synthesizes unique new frames by warping and interpolating frames of the original sequence... employing RE:Vision's proprietary tracking technology that calculates motion for each individual pixel. Twixtor has options to help prevent tearing and stretching of objects as they cross or go out of the frame, including a smart blending option for pans and zooms to prevent inappropriate streaking or weird artifacts at frame borders. Twixtor also has an option to automatically enhance dark imagery or imagery with poorly defined edges. With the features, many pieces of footage that could be difficult to track become well behaved.

What's in the Twixtor OFX version?
  • Warping and interpolation of frames to "time warp" input footage.
  • Time remap using animatable speed percentages, or exact frame numbers.
  • Unclamped floating point image support.
  • Contains an option to remove motion blur when slowing footage.
  • Contains an option to automatically enhance dark imagery or imagery with poorly defined edges. In many cases, footage that could be difficult to track becomes much more well-behaved upon retiming.
  • Support for marking material so that Twixtor does not motion-interpolate inappropriately across a cut or other transition.
  • Support for up to 3 foreground mattes for up to 4 layers of individual tracking. This is useful when crossing objects in a scene make tracking problematic.
  • Motion Vector Import. Give Twixtor motion vectors generated elsewhere (for example, from a 3D system) to time remap footage.
  • Motion Vector Export. You can now output the motion vectors that Twixtor generates internally. This powerful feature comes with visual debugging modes to more intuitively assess and tune the quality of the motion estimation. The motion vectors can then be used elsewhere in the pipeline (including the Twixtor plugin that imports motion vectors).
Pricing info:

  • Nuke 5.1 and later, Maya Composite (Toxik) 2009 SP1 and later.

Twixtor continues to be supported for Adobe After Effects, Eyeon Fusion, Apple Final Cut Pro, Apple Final Cut Express, Autodesk combustion, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid editing systems, Autodesk Systems (Sparks), Autodesk SoftImage, Apple Shake, Quantel genQ and others. Demo versions, sample footage and tutorials are available on the RE:Vision Effects website: .
