Review: Wacom Intuos4 graphics tablet system

A very nice review of Wacom Intuos4 by John Virata is senior editor of Digital Media Online.

The Intuos4 provides for a wonderful stylus and tablet system. Combined with the included mouse, there is really no other need for another input device. The Intuos4 does it all. There is a reason why Wacom tablets are the best on the market and that is their superior functionality, user experience, fit and finish, and unboxing experience.

Read the full review here. Check out the Wacom tablets in our store.

If you're wondering how to pronounce Wacom (Wokum, Wack 'em, Way-Com), here's Wes from Wacom to show you the Cintiq tablet and how to say it :-)

Don't panic! Adobe CS3 runs on Snow Leopard

InfoWorld has tested the Adobe CS3 apps in Snow Leopard and says they work fine, which I'm sure is a big relief to those of you running CS3 who want to upgrade to Snow Leopard but heard that Adobe will not support CS3 in Snow Leopard.

Which is what I think Adobe was really trying to say: The company notes it has not tested CS3 on Snow Leopard (and doesn't intend to), so it's not guaranteeing -- "supporting" -- CS3 on Snow Leopard. Adobe could have chosen better wording.

Read the full article here at InfoWorld.com.

If you want to upgrade to Adobe CS4, we have a bundle special that expires today! Adobe CS4 Bundle Upgrade Sale - Save $100 when you upgrade from an earlier version of Adobe Creative Suite, Production Studio, or Macromedia Studio to Creative Suite 4.

Imagenomic releases Portraiture 2 for Adobe Lightroom

New Software Effectively Utilizes both Lightroom Edit-In and Export Features, Rounds out Support for Leading Image Editing and Workflow Applications

Alexandria, VA, August 27, 2009. Imagenomic announced today the release of Portraiture 2 for Adobe Lightroom. This latest Portraiture 2 product edition from Imagenomic delivers all of the productivity benefits of fast and accurate skin retouching to the Lightroom user community, and complements earlier introductions of Portraiture 2 for Adobe Photoshop and Apple Aperture.

Portraiture 2 versions for Lightroom include native 32 and 64-bit support for Windows Vista, and support for the latest Mac Intel platforms and OSX releases for Apple computers. All of the familiar features and controls that have made Portraiture 2 popular with Photoshop and Aperture users are now available in the new Lightroom edition. Lightroom users also benefit from two Portraiture workflow usage modes, using both the Edit In and Export techniques for individual and batch image editing and processing.

“Lightroom users make up an important part of our customer community, and this latest version of Portraiture 2 is designed to meet their demands and expectations,” says David McDonell, CEO of Imagenomic. “We have spent considerable time and effort to ensure that Portraiture 2 works seamlessly within the Lightroom workflow, and that it conforms to our highest technical and performance benchmarks for all Imagenomic products; this latest release meets these stringent criteria and we anticipate that the Lightroom community will agree," McDonell added.

This latest Portraiture 2 edition is available for immediate use on a free, 15-day trial basis from the company's website. For new customers, the Lightroom edition is available for purchase at $199.95. For registered users of Portraiture 2 for Photoshop or Aperture, the Lightroom edition is available at the discounted price of $99.95. See www.imagenomic.com for additional details.

Imagenomic is honored to announce that Portraiture 2 has been recognized by American PHOTO magazine with a 2009 Editor's Choice Award in their July/August issue. You can read more about what the editor's had to say about the software by visiting www.imagenomic.com to find the link to American PHOTO online.

Prices Lowered on Professional Video Templates

If you haven't checked these templates out, they're extremely high quality templates for Adobe After Effects and they're available as an instant download! There are video samples of each template too, so please have a look around.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Adobe CS3 Support

With Mac OS X Snow Leopard shipping tomorrow, Adobe has released some information about compatibility with Adobe CS3 products. The Adobe Snow Leopard FAQ states:

Older versions of Adobe creative software were not included in our testing efforts. While older Adobe and Macromedia applications may install and run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6), they were designed, tested, and released to the public several years before this new operating system became available. You may therefore
experience a variety of installation, stability, and reliability issues for which there is no resolution. Older versions of our creative software will not be updated to support Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6).

John Nack from Adobe had a follow up article, Information about Photoshop CS3 on Snow Leopard on his blog and says that Photoshop has been tested on CS3 and it works with the exception of a couple of small issues they're looking into.

That's great about Photoshop CS3, but what about After Effects, Premiere Pro, Flash and the other apps? I am really hoping they will work fine without much incident.

I can see both sides of the argument here for support of CS3 in Snow Leopard. Creative Suite 3 did come out a couple of years ago and Adobe could not have had an inkling what was in store for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It makes sense to build your new software for the most current systems so that you can have optimal efficiency and performance.

That said, users who are still on CS3 are going to be forced to upgrade to CS4 if they want to use Snow Leopard, and that will certainly make a few people angry.

I'm curious how this will be received by Mac users. Hopefully the majority of the Mac users out there have upgraded to Creative Suite 4 and this is not an issue at all.

How do you feel about it? Does it affect you? It doesn't affect me because I'm running CS4 and I don't plan on upgrading to Snow Leopard right away. Leave a comment with your thoughts.

Review: Idustrial Revolution ParticleMetrix

particle metrixA really nice review of this 'FUN' plug-in from idustrial revolution.

If you want to have some real fun with ParticleMetrix and get a sense of its power, give it a run in Apple Motion so you can make use of Motion's real-time interaction. You can apply the filter, loop the playback and tweak away, all with real-time feedback. OK, so you might bring your graphics card to its knees. But is it ever fun! In fact, I think that's one of the best words to use when describing ParticleMetrix: fun.

Check out the review by Scott Simmons over at Studio Daily. I highly recommend that you download a free demo of ParticleMetrix here. Then, after you see how fun and cool it is, you can buy it from Toolfarm and cash in on our everyday 5% discount!

GenArts Expands Sapphire Licensing Options To Include Floating Licenses

Institutional Users On Adobe After Effects and Apple Final Cut Pro Can Now Enjoy Significantly Reduced Support Costs While Maximizing Resource Allocation

sapphireCAMBRIDGE, Mass. - August 25, 2009 - GenArts Inc., the premier provider of specialized visual effects software for the film, television and video industries, announced today a floating licensing option for institutional users of GenArts Sapphire on After Effects and Final Cut Pro host systems. The eagerly awaited floating license option offers significant flexibility, along with reduced support costs and more efficient resource allocation.

The new floating license option - supported via the Reprise License Manager (RLM) - allows customers to maintain licenses on a centralized server and "check them in and out" to users on a local area network as they are needed. This new Sapphire licensing option provides the following benefits:

  • Lower support costs. Since licenses can be seamlessly moved from one machine to another, managing licenses is far easier and machine downtime is minimized.
  • Greater flexibility. Customers can now easily support the dynamic requirements of freelance and temporary artists.
  • Efficient resource allocation. Customers can gain visibility into artist usage patterns and budget license purchases as their concurrency needs grow.

"GenArts Sapphire's new floating license option is essential in helping us keep our artist productivity high and our support costs low," said Saker Klippsten, Head of Engineering, Zoic Studios. "If a machine fails, we can have another one up and licensed immediately, keeping our artists working. In addition, floating licenses allow us to easily configure temporary workstations for freelance artists as they come and go. This new licensing option really saves us money while giving us much more freedom."

"Post-production houses rely on GenArts Sapphire every single day to ensure stellar visual effects results in feature films, commercials and television shows", said Steve Bannerman, CMO of GenArts. "Our new floating license option comes as a result of our continuing efforts to listen to our customers and deliver Sapphire in all the ways that meet their needs. We realize that our customers' businesses have changed and larger facilities need flexible options for keeping costs low and productivity high. Whether it's floating licenses, rentals or Web-activated serial numbers, GenArts delivers."

GenArts Sapphire's new floating license option is available to users of After Effects and Final Cut Pro host systems for $2,499. However, existing customers may upgrade their current Web-activated licenses to floating for $800 per license. Customers may have any combination of floating, rental and serial numbers.

Since the company's founding in 1996, GenArts software has been utilized in hundreds of films, television broadcasts and commercials, including more than 20 Oscar-nominated pieces such as Titanic; I, Robot; Armageddon; Star Wars Episode I, II and III; The Matrix trilogy; The Lord of the Rings trilogy; Pearl Harbor; Spider Man; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban; Transformers; The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; and many more.

Boris FX Announces New Boris Continuum Unit: Motion Tracker

BCCCorner Pin, Match Move, Wire Remover, and Witness Protection Filters for $199

Marlborough MA - August 18, 2009 - Boris FX, the leading developer of integrated effects technology for video and film, announced that a new Boris Continuum Unit, Motion Tracker, is now available. The Boris Continuum Motion Tracker Unit includes the Corner Pin, Match Move, Wire Remover, and Witness Protection filters from Boris Continuum Complete 6:
  • BCC Corner Pin allows editors to map media to a specific area on a moving object in a media file. For example, if a media file includes a moving bus with an advertisement on its side, an editor could use Corner Pin to track and replace the advertisement with a logo.
  • BCC Match Move locks the movement of one image clip to another image clip. One of the great advantages of using the Match Move filter is that it includes full DVE functions such as tumble, spin, and rotate along with interesting lighting and light wrap compositing features.
  • BCC Wire Remover removes wires and unwanted objects from still or moving images by either cloning or blending pixels together from surrounding areas.
  • BCC Witness Protection allows editors to track the motion of an object in a media file. Editors can then use the motion path data to control another aspect of the effect. For example, an editor can track a logo on a t-shirt and use a blur to obscure the logo. Mosaic, tint, or brightness/contrast effects could also be applied to the specified area.

Boris Continuum Motion Tracker supports Apple Final Cut Pro, Apple Final Cut Express, Apple Motion, and Adobe After Effects. Apple's new Final Cut Studio 3 release is supported.

The Motion Tracker Unit is the latest addition to previously-released Boris Continuum Units: Chroma Key, Pan and Zoom, UpRez, Motion Key, Lens Flare, Film Look, Glitters, Optical Stabilizer, Light Rays, 3D Objects, and Cartoon Look.

Pricing and Availability
Boris Continuum Motion Tracker is immediately available through the Boris FX worldwide reseller channel and direct from the Boris FX web site at www.borisfx.com for an MSRP of $199 USD. Customers who purchase the Boris Continuum Motion Tracker Unit or any other Boris Continuum Unit may credit the price of the Unit towards the full Boris Continuum Complete plug-in suite. Interview: A Conversation with Brian Dressel

interview w/ brian dressel

I met Brian Dressell at MGFest in January of 2009 at Pixel Brothers Studio. It was sort of an immersive art gallery showing with several artists, a DJ and all sorts of overstimulation. Brian Dressel, whom I met at the exhibit, was showing projected video that a person can interact with. And, it turns out, Brian is from my hometown and is a good friend of a friend (small world, I know!). He's also the man when it comes to interactive video. He and his team at M1 Interactive have taken video to the next level. You may have even seen his innovative work in advertisements on the Vegas strip or played a Respondr game in a public space or tradeshow.

New Product: Topaz Detail for Photoshop

topaz detailTopaz Detail manipulates image detail and sharpness without creating any edge artifacts. Sharpen without oversharpening, accentuate details without increasing noise, and add dynamism to photos without making them look fake.

Truly artifact-free edge manipulation has only been made possible by some very recent advances in image processing. All other sharpening and detail manipulation techniques up until this point either produce edge halos or drastically increase the noise levels in the image. Topaz Detail does neither, which makes it perfectly suited for stunning but completely natural image enhancement.

topaz detail

Push details and sharpness as much or as little as you like with Topaz Detail because it's the first detail manipulation product available that don't create halos or other artifacts. This unique trait makes Topaz Detail ideal for sharpening purposes and for naturally accenting photo detail. Most photographers find that their shots look crisper and richer with the greater feature definition and depth that Topaz Detail brings. For example, Topaz Detail especially shines on features like mountains, buildings, and wedding dresses.

The great thing about this filter is that now enhancing detail and image clarity no longer means sacrificing realism. Give your photography that elusive extra "pop" easily and naturally with Topaz Detail.

Try it yourself by downloading a 30-day completely functional free trial and see what this new technology can bring to your photography!

The Foundry's RollingShutter Plug-in Tackles CMOS Skew and Wobble Effects- August Sale!

The Foundry RollingShutter is a brand new plug-in tool for After Effects and Nuke, which tackles image-distortion problems often experienced by users of CMOS cameras.

Rolling shutter effects are commonly found with video cameras employing CMOS image sensors, which record every frame line-by-line from top to bottom of the image, rather than as a single snapshot of a point in time.

As parts of the image are recorded at different times, moving objects can become distorted and appear skewed. Problems can also arise with flashing or strobing lights.

Aside from not looking great, 3D tracking during VFX post production can become a very difficult task as the tracking points themselves are unstable.

The Foundry's RollingShutter plug-in tackles skew and perceived 'wobble' problems from the VFX artist's perspective. The plug-in will often vastly improve the look of distorted footage, by either minimizing or eradicating image distortions.

Unlike solutions tied to camera stabilization, that stretch the image as a whole, the RollingShutter plug-in compensates for local skewing and distortion in the scene, by correcting each object individually. This approach even allows you to correct objects moving in different directions in locked-off shots.

RollingShutter is therefore particularly good at enabling software camera trackers to work effectively on a wide range of problematic footage.

“As one of the beta testers for The Foundry's RollingShutter, I have been very impressed with its assistance in making skewed footage trackable. So much so that I’ve decided to teach it as part of my FX PHD camera tracking curriculum.”
- Victor Wolansky, fxphd.com Professor

RollingShutter is available for After Effects CS3 & CS4 and Nuke 5.1 or later.

AUGUST PROMOTION
Buy one get one free! Buy a license of RollingShutter in August and we'll give you a second copy absolutely free. You could run RollingShutter on both your After Effects and Nuke systems or workstation and laptop at the same time… or give the 2nd copy to a colleague or friend?

Tutorial: Creating Butterflies in Motion 3 with Noise Industries Plug-ins

By Zak Peric, Apple Certified Apple Motion 3 Pro:

In this animation I explored the possibility of using image to create butterfly flying. Also I have used Generator from Noise Industries to create clouds effect.

This is by no means a boundaries breaking animation. However you will be pleasantly surprised to learn how quickly you can build very believable animations of birds or butterfly’s flying.

For this animation I have used Noise Industries Generator and Futurismo Backgrounds Replicators to create grass swaying and Behaviors to make butterfly fly.

Tutorial: Create a Faux Depth of Field using NewBlue FX Rack Focus

Rack Focus, part of the NewBlue FX Video Essentials II collection, allows you to create shots with faux depth of field by selectively blurring a portion of the image. This is great for creating a film look depth of field, artificially controlling the center of attention, or even making a scene look like it was shot with miniatures.

Free Sample of AE Camera Training: Auto Orient Layers to Camera

In Toolfarm Expert Series Professional Training for After Effects Camera, Rob Birnholz uncovers the mysteries of the After Effects camera, going through basics and moving quickly through the more advanced settings and controls.

We were chatting a bit about the training and wanted to clarify it's purpose. With the Expert Series, the concept is to focus on a function (like the camera) or a plug-in and get the user up to speed quickly so they can apply the knowledge to whatever project may come their way. None of our training goes into every little detail (that's what the manual is for) but gives the user a good knowledge so they feel comfortable diving in. It's not one of those "How to create a cool effect" tutorials either. It is meant to build skills in AE quickly in professionals who don't have a lot of time.

If you need to improve your AE skills or if you're new to AE, this training is for you. If you've been using AE since it was COSA, you will still learn a lot that you can apply to your everyday work. Check it out!

CHV QC Integration FX V1.7.2: Final Cut Studio 3 Compatible.

Final Cut Studio 3CHV-electronics, software developer of plugins for Motion, Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express announced today the release of an update of the plugin package QC Integration FX, based on Apple's technologies FxPlug and Quartz Composer.

Version 1.7.2 addresses the new release of Final Cut Studio and enhances the compatibility with Final Cut Pro 7 and Motion 4.

QC Integration FX allows the user to do more than any other plugin package. Using Apple's Quartz Composer technology this package provides the user with the most advanced plugin platform to quickly create and modify plugins for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express and Motion.

QC Integration FX is specifically designed to enable the user to build FxPlug plugins for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express and Motion and also to build plugins for sale with copyright-protection. Third party developers can create Quartz Composer based visual effects and sell them securely on their own with CHV's unmatched copy-protection system preventing the uncontrolled distribution of serial numbers.

The plugin package runs on all PowerPC and Intel Mac computers on OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and OSX 10.5 (Leopard) that are qualified to run any version of Final Cut Studio or Final Cut Express.

All FxPlug plugin packages from CHV-electronics are GPU-accelerated, using the full power of the installed graphics adapter for direct feedback and fast rendering.
