Plug-in Profile: RE:Vision Effects ReelSmart Motion Blur

reelsmart video
I spoke at MGFest in Chicago last Friday and my topic was Ten Must-Have Plug-ins for Adobe After Effects. The plug-ins I chose were plug-ins that I find the most useful and most unique, not necessarily the plug-ins Toolfarm sells the most of or makes the most profit on. I'll be putting the presentation on the site in the future, after I redo some of the movie samples.

One of the plug-ins on my list is RE:Vision Effects ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB), available for After Effects 7, CS3/CS4, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Combustion and Boris RED.

Why do I like ReelSmart Motion Blur?
RSMB allows you to add blur on movement in your video where there is no blur, automatically tracking every pixel in a sequence and then blurs (or deblurs) based on calculated motion!

Most plug-ins for blur will apply it to the entire frame or image. RSMB somehow knows where the motion in the video is located and applies it to only that area. For example, if you're shooting green screen footage with a high shutter speed for easier keying, you can add the blur back into the shot in post with ReelSmart Motion Blur. It's also very useful for very crisp and clean 3D renders that need some natural blur added, as shown in the video example.

This plug-in will definitely improve your composites. It is easy to use, has many variables that can be controlled, is very fast and is also inexpensive, at just $89.95 for the AE version.

The Example
If you click the image at the top right of this article, you'll see a 3D DNA strand that is treated with RSMB, as well as the original shot,a very crisp, clean 3D rendering (iStockPhoto).

Chicago Motion Graphics Festival

Well, I've arrived in Chicago. If you are coming to the festival, there is still space in the conference tomorrow morning. My presentation is bright and early at 9a, and it's on the 10 must-have plug-ins for AE. Saturday I'm instructing a fullday seminar on keying and greenscreen from 9-4 and there are a couple of open spots if you're interested. Toolfarm is a top level sponsor of the Fest and trust me, it's very informative and lots of fun. I'll be sending updates via Twitter (MicheleYamazaki) and MGFest is already sending loads of tweets (updates), so you can live vicariously if you can't make it to the windy city.

Red Giant Datamator (formerly Digital Anarchy Data Animator) turns charts and graphs into compelling animated masterpieces in After Effects. Datamator includes a set of eight plug-ins that make it easier for videographers to create graphs and charts directly in After Effects instead of using PowerPoint or re-creating graphics from scratch.

"We have worked hard to make Datamator a solid product that delivers fast 3D data charting in After Effects," said Sean Safreed, Co-Founder and Director of Product Management at Red Giant Software. "With this release, we have completed the re-launch of the full line of the former Digital Anarchy video plug-ins for broadcast designers. (Chicago, IL, December 1, 2008) - From the Rolling Stone playing at Soldier Field to the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies, video projection has become a touchstone for live performances. Chicago has long been a live music capital in the nation, and as the cost of video projectors fall, the business of music is changing.

"Video can now be 'played' just like a musical instrument can be played," explains Mason Dixon, founder of the Chicago Motion Graphics Festival, "the lights made for live concerts now project full-motion video, and live music performance software like Ableton Live now sports video capabilities."

The 2009 Motion Graphics Festival's will showcase the "Video Band" at it's Audio Visual Performance Showcase at the Chicago Cultural Center on January 25th from 6:30pm to 9pm. The showcase features some of the worlds best talent in this new mode of performance, such as Stoptime 341 (http://Stoptime341.com), the Chicago-based, touring video artist for the internationally acclaimed DJ Tiesto, and MFChicago the video artists behind Lollapalooza’s video accompaniment.

"What's really interesting to see now, is how new visual genres will form. How will the video that plays with a rock band be different than what is played with a country band?" Mason theorizes.

The technology behind video for bands has launched a number of online communities such as Create Digital Motion (http://CreateDigitalMotion.com) and VJ Forums (http://VJForums.com), new software companies like VidVox (http://VidVox.net) and Ableton (http://www.ableton.com), and even special stock footage sites such as VJ Loops (http://www.vjloops.tv).

The Motion Graphics Festival runs from Monday, January 19th to Sunday January 25th in various locations across downtown Chicago. Up to the minute information can be found at www.MGFest.com.
