Take the Adobe CS4 Product for a Test Drive

Want to check out the CS4 products before you buy them? Download them from Adobe and if you love them (which we know you will!) you can buy them at Toolfarm and we'll give you a serial number which will unlock the trial versions completely. You will not have to wait for them to ship to you!

When I say unlock completely... what does that mean? I had a chat with David Helmly from Adobe yesterday and he explained that many of codecs in the video suite are not in the trial version because Adobe licenses those codecs and can't put them in the trial. As soon as you put your serial number in, the codecs are unlocked and will appear.

Adobe is still working on getting all the trial versions up on their site, but you can sign up for notification about when they'll be ready.

Create Animated Titles with Motype

MotypeJem Schofield, a super cool guy and Final Cut Studio guru, has an article up at Studio Daily about creating titles with Noise Industries Yanobox Motype. I met Jem at the Michigan Final Cut Studio Conference earlier in October and he helped me a ton after my laptop crashed. At the conference he did mention how cool he thought the new Noise Industries Yanobox Motype plug-in is and I can't agree more! The plug-in is Mac only, but will run in Apple Final Cut Pro 6, Apple Motion 6, Apple Final Cut Express, Adobe After Effects CS3.

Jem also has another article up about plug-ins at Studio Daily worth checking out.

Digital Film Tools releases Windows 64 bit versions of Plugins for Adobe Photoshop CS4

digital film toolsOak Park, CA October 20, 2008 - Digital Film Tools releases Windows 64 bit versions of EZ Mask v1.5, Light v3.5, Ozone v2.5, Power Mask v1, Power Stroke v1, Snap v2.5 and zMatte v2.5 for use with Adobe Photoshop CS4 64 bit.

EZ Mask
EZ Mask is an easy to use interactive image masking tool capable of extracting almost any object in an image- even if you are dealing with fine hair detail, smoke, or reflections. The extracted object can then be combined with another image or individually filtered in Adobe Photoshop.

Light!
Light can be added to a scene where none existed before just as if you were adding light at the time of shooting. Realistic lighting and shadow is introduced using the entire pattern/gobo and gel library created by Gamproducts, Inc.

Ozone
Inspired by Ansel Adams' Zone System for still photography, Ozone allows you to manipulate the color of an image with incredible flexibility and accuracy using a Digital Zone System.

Power Mask
Power Mask is the first realtime, interactive tool capable of extracting almost any object in an image- even if you are dealing with fine hair detail, smoke, or reflections. As you simply paint along the edge of the object to be extracted, either the mask or the final composite can be revealed instantly. The extracted object can then be combined with another image or individually filtered in Adobe Photoshop.

Power Stroke
Power Stroke introduces a simple, interactive stroke-based interface to quickly and intuitively perform targeted adjustments. Instead of meticulously selecting regions or hand-painting masks, regions of interest are isolated by drawing a few simple brush strokes with adjustments then made only in those areas. Strokes can be assigned multiple adjustments and effects such as color correction, recoloring or desaturation, colorization of black and white images, blur, fill light for dimly lit image areas and Diffusion/Glow.

Snap
Snap is an easy to use interactive image cutout tool designed to extract solid or opaque objects. Image cutout is the process of removing or isolating an object in a picture. The extracted object can then be combined with another image or individually filtered in Adobe Photoshop.

zMatte
Intelligent blue and green screen keying that is easy to use, yet provides the tools you need when presented with a challenging shot- including DV and HD de-artifacting, color suppression, matte manipulation, color correction, edge treatment and light wrapping.

Digital Film Tools brings together the unbeatable combination of superior software designers, motion picture visual effects veterans, video editors and photographers. Add three Emmy Awards and experience in creating visual effects for hundreds of feature films, commercials and television shows and you have a recipe for success.

Red Giant PlaneSpace Now Available

planespace

Arrange and Animate 3D Layers in After Effects- The Easy Way

Learn More/Purchase Red Giant PlaneSpace | Try PlaneSpace

PlaneSpace eliminates the tedious task of managing the individual layers in multi-layer effects. The Creator tools automatically create layers that form cubic, cylindrical, and spheroid shapes or complex matrices, while the six Distribute tools arrange 3D layers throughout 3D space into the shape of your choice without requiring keyframes or complicated math.

No Keyframes Necessary
Unlike keyframe assistants such as The Wiggler, PlaneSpace does not need keyframes to be present in a layer. In fact, these tools weren't designed to set keyframes at all, but are designed to arrange layers in 3D space. Of course, you can still set keyframes to animate the position or orientation of your layers, to make truly sophisticated objects in 3D.

Unlimited Number of Layers
The number of layers that PlaneSpace can manipulate is limited only by your computer’s processing power. PlaneSpace can even duplicate and distribute large groups of layers. 400 layers? No problem – PlaneSpace makes it possible, and easy.

Powerful Controls
No matter what shape you choose for your layers, you customize settings for size, distribution, distance (how far apart the layers will be), and incremental distance. Set repeat values to save RAM by duplicating 10 layers instead of 100 individual ones.

Media 100 Version 13 Now Available, New Apple Final Cut Studio Integration

Media_100Media 100 Version 13 is now available, download a Free 14-Day Trial! New features include...
  • XML Interchange. Transfer projects to and from Apple Final Cut Studio via the industry-standard XML language format. Filtered clips and non-standard transitions and titles can be automatically pre-rendered for seamless integration with Apple Final Cut Pro. Standard video transitions and audio cross-fades remain fully editable. Work on the system of your choice within a larger workgroup or collaborate with Apple Final Cut Pro editors on the same project. Bring your Media 100 timeline into Apple Color for color grading, keeping all of your edits intact and linking to your original media files.

  • Multi-Channel Audio Output. You can now assign multiple audio tracks to virtual buses and process each bus separately in the timeline. Each bus can separately master to one or more output hardware channels. The new multi-channel audio mixing and output capabilities give you tools for complex mixing tasks with different language versions within your timeline. Through the use of multiple mixing buses you can easily create sub-mixes for voice and music and keep complex mixing sessions clearly arranged. Plus, when needed, you can output all the different mixes to tape or to a QuickTime file in a single pass, reducing the time needed to master multi-track projects. Now you can easily monitor and master surround mixes by using multiple outputs. The mixing capabilities with the ability to assign tracks to multiple buses and the option to apply audio effects both to individual clips as well as audio buses makes Media 100's audio features comparable to dedicated audio workstations.

  • JKL Keyboard Control for video trimming and Time-code Support on imported BWF and WAV files.

SFMograph October 16th Meeting

From Brandon Grande, Marcello Grand and Matt Silverman, the hosts of SFMograph:

FIRST LOOK AT ADOBE CS4

SFMograph hosts a first look at Adobe Production Premium CS4 featuring Adobe After Effects. Our favorite software company, Adobe, will be on-hand to demonstrate the recently announced Creative Suite 4 (CS4) Production Premium.

Matt Silverman, Creative Director at Phoenix Designs (and sfmograph co-host) will break down the motion graphics stinger his team created for the Adobe CS4 launch. Created in collaboration with Nando Costa from Portland design studio Nervo, and Barcelona's Vasava, the piece explores the CS4 Master Collection as we travel through the Nervo and Vasava artwork. Phoenix completed this heavy AE project in After Effects CS4 (along with Photoshop CS4, Maya, and Cinema4D), and will go over some of the new features which they used to complete the animation including 3D model import and separate X/Y/Z transforms, as well as go over an interesting use of 3D transmission layers with falloff lighting using Buena Depth Cue. Bring the kids for this one... it's going to be swell. A QuickTime of the stinger can be seen here: http://www.phoenixedit.com/html/gfx_spts.html

"Plug-in of the Month" for October is MochaAE. One of the biggest shortcomings in After Effects has been it's motion tracker. Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel, Adobe turned to Imagineer Systems to license it's industry leading planar tracker for CS4. Planar tracking is a revolutionary way to track objects. Instead of tracking four individual points points which are all independent of each other, MochaAE looks at these four points as the corners of a 3D plane, and can not deviate the shape of this plane over time. The result are rock solid tracks, even if one of the corners becomes obscured. There is no other tracker in the world that comes close to the power of Imagineer's planar tracker (even the big guys can't compete on million dollar systems). We'll show how to track in MochaAE, move Corner Pin data into After Effects, and extract stabilization data for scale and rotation based on the corner's points using some fancy expressions.

Now you may be saying, "MochaAE is not a plug-in... it is an application!" This is true. So in the spirit of "Plug-in of the Month", we are going to show a first look at a brand new Red Giant plug-in, "RG Warp". RG Warp comes with a few killer plug-ins, most notably RG Corner Pin. This advanced corner pin filter is the perfect complement to MochaAE. It provides high quality filtering and anti-aliasing (including super-sampling), "to" and "from" pins (like Nuke), offset channels (like Flame), secondary transforms, and MochaAE import. It is a must-have for anyone interested in using MochaAE to it's fullest potential. RG Warp also includes some other killer plug-ins which we will detail at the event.

Finally, we are working hard to gather a bunch of great prizes for the raffle. We'll provide more details as we get closer to the meeting and post updates on our site, sfmograph.org.

QC Integration FX is specifically designed to enable the user to build FxPlug plug-ins for Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express and Motion and to build plug-ins for sale with copyright-protection. Third party developers can now create Quartz Composer based visual effects and sell them securely on their own with CHV's unmatched copy-protection system preventing the uncontrolled distribution of serial numbers.

Additional plug-ins will be added to the package as they become available.

The plugin package runs on all PowerPC and Intel Mac computers on OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and OSX 10.5 (Leopard) that are qualified to run Final Cut Studio or Final Cut Express.

All FxPlug plug-in packages from CHV-electronics are GPU-accelerated, using the full power of the installed graphics adapter for direct feedback and fast rendering.

What should Adobe Do with Premiere Pro?

Stu Maschwitz, the guy behind Magic Bullet, has some food for thought on his Prolost blog about merging AE and Premiere Pro in his article What Should Adobe Do with Premiere Pro? Leave comments! Let's get some discussion going here.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Help is here!

I was checking out the latest post at Adobe Premiere Pro Training blog and Stephen Muratore who is the Sr. Technical writer for Adobe psted an article about the newly consolidated help and support for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. They are now using a Google search engine and have links to all sorts of resources, a forum, blog and so on. I recently learned how to use Premiere Pro, which I hadn't used in years, and I have to say, it's a great program. I find it very easy to use.

I'm sure you've heard that Adobe CS4 will be available soon and you can preorder it here. Are you excited? Oh, I'm excited!

Some AE Fun with Trapcode 3D Stroke from Dennis Radeke

Trapcode 3D Stroke = Fun in my opinion. Visit The Genesis Project for the article and project files. If you want to play along, but don't have 3D Stroke, you can download a trial version here. If you love it (which I KNOW you will), here's where you can buy it. It's a bargain at $99 and one license will work in several host applications on the same computer. And it's fun. Whee!

Here is his video:

More on Adobe's Pixel Bender in CS4 and Flash, GPUs, and Performance

Peter Kim has an article, More on Adobe's Pixel Bender in CS4 and Flash, GPUs, and Performance, on Create Digital Motion, with lots of nice images. He talks about Pixel Bender in AE CS4, Photshop CS4 and Flash 10.

Final Cut Studio Conference

I'm in the Final Sesson of the Final Cut Studio Conference in Mt. Pleasant, MI, and thought I'd just give you the redux and you can relive my torturous last couple of days.

Torturous?! Yes! I left for the conference on Wednesday and just before I was getting ready to leave, my Mac Book Pro died. Died with all of the notes and project files that I needed. Died with my life. I am way to dependent on my laptop. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup and also I could use the Target Boot Mode on my old G4 Powerbook, which I am now using (and very thankful to still have around!) I spent the next two hours scrambling to get my stuff together for the conference. Of course, my Powerboook didn't have FCS installed and I couldn't find the installer disks anywhere. I did get it installed thanks to my good friend Karen (thanks Karen!) but it was very stressful.

I got to the Flying Eagle Casino where the conference is held. When you drive in the front gate there are two enormous eagles on the sign in the front and I was expecting a super-cheesy Native American decorated hotel. I have to say, the hotel and conference center (and the pool) are gorgeous. This is a beautiful facility.

There was a meet and greet that evening and I got to meet the other trainers, including Jem Schofield and Mike Wilkinson. Both were huge helps to me getting things installed on this PowerBook so I could get things together. They had a nice little cocktail party spread and many of the attendees came. Most were from Detroit and the suburbs but I met some people from all over Michigan.

I was pretty frazzled about my laptop situation, so after the meet and greet I just went up to my room and tried to get myself together for my presentations. I did a presentation on an introduction to Motion first. I used a computer that Steve Julin, the guy running the conference, had set up. That presentation actually went really well. It is material that I know really well and it's easy stuff to explain. Next I did a another 90 minute presentation, this one on working with 3D, lights and particles in Motion. That also went pretty okay. It was a huge conference room with big round tables and felt like I was at a wedding reception (minus the bad music and drunk groomsmen of course!) I've never taught in such a large room, but considering my computer problems, I made it through pretty okay.

After that, lunch. They had a really nice buffet with fish and chicken in gravy with biscuits and salad and veggies. It was very swanky.

At 4pm we had a 60 tips in 60 seconds. First Mike Wilkinson covered 20 tips in Final Cut Pro. Jem Schofield then did a fantastic 20 tips on DVD Studio Pro. I then did 20 on Apple Motion. My caffine had worn off at that point and files weren't linking here and there. Let's just say it could have gone better.

Steve Julin took us out for drinks and food with the trainers and then I went back to the room to finish my keying presentation that took place this morning. I ended up changing my presentation at the last minute due to problems with not having everything I needed on this laptop, but overall I think it went okay.

Steve Julin was telling me that next year they are considering opening the conference up to Adobe products and even Avid for classes. I think that would be fantastic and I'd love to come back next year (with MY laptop in full working order) and teach some After Effects and plugins. It is what I know best, afterall. This has been a terrific conference and I highly recommend it for 2009. This hotel is fantastic. The conference was very well organized and I've learned so much from the other trainers. Thanks to Steve Julin, for inviting me to teach some seminars.

Free Plug-in- exrdisplay for After Effects

open exrBrendan at fnord software has been kind enough to post a free plug-in for After Effects to adjust for switching between standard linear gamma displays and OpenEXR formats; a floating point file format developed by ILM and used by products such as Autodesk's Inferno for working with 32-bit HDR (high-dyamic-range) imagery.
