3D Clouds with Text in Cinema 4D

There has been a very busy topic in our forum this week, How to Make a Cloud of Words. Ko followed up with a tutorial for Cinema 4D.

3D Clouds with Text from Ko Maruyama on Vimeo. Ko says "Using Text splines to generate clouds in CINEMA 4D. It's a fairly simple task, but you just need to know where it is. If you have Advanced Rendering, you have Pyrocluster Shaders.

Using the Thinking Particle presets (Object/TP), you can make any spline form the basis for your clouds.

NOTE: Don't forget to add the Pyrocluster Tracer Object to your scene."

Plug-In Post Q+A: Tradcode's Peder Norrby

Michele Yamazaki, Peder Norrby and Ko Maruyama

Studio Daily interviews Peder Norrby, Trapcode's founder and developer. Read the interview here.

Peder says, "There is also a business-perspective: our goal is for our customers to wow their clients and make more money using the products than the cost of the products themselves, so it is turns out to be a very good investment for them. Good investments are always popular, and news of them tend to spread." So, that's his secret!

Dear Adobe

Adam Meisel emailed me about a site he created, along with Erik Frick, called Dear Adobe

Adobe has been very positive about their site and has gone so far as to respond directly to the After Effects Top 25 gripes. It's a VERY entertaining read. Enjoy!

Final Cut Pro 6 Gets Furnace &Amp; Keylight: The Foundry release their first plug-ins for Final Cut Pro

London, UK. September, 2008. Leading visual effects software developer, The Foundry, is delighted to announce the release of Furnace 4 and Keylight for Final Cut Pro 6. These toolsets are The Foundry's first product releases for Final Cut Pro and give artists access to a host of Academy Award © Winning advanced image processing and keying tools.

Thousands of leading digital artists worldwide already take advantage of Furnace and Keylight to enhance workflow and boost productivity in digital visual effects post production.

With Furnace 4, Final Cut Pro 6 artists will - for the first time - be able to access The Foundry's sophisticated motion estimation technology.

Ben Kent, Senior Software Engineer, comments: "With Furnace on Final Cut Pro editors and artists will be able to use advanced motion estimation technology to repair and retime troublesome shots without the hassle, delay and generation loss involved in exporting to a separate compositing package. Improved results and quicker workflow all in one!"

furnaceBased on Apple's FxPlug standard, The Foundry Furnace 4 for Final Cut Pro 6 includes:

DeFlicker is a fully automated plug-in designed to remove luminance flicker in a sequence. It can remove multiple over-lapping phase different flickers, while adapting to cope with motion in the sequence.

DeNoise is a noise and grain removal plug-in that uses advanced motion estimation technology along the direction of motion, thus reducing the noise without introducing any of the artefacts typically associated with noise reduction.

Kronos also uses The Foundry's advanced motion estimation technology to build in-between frames in a sequence. Kronos can be used to speed up (with motion blur) or slow down an image sequence. Artists have the option of supplying foreground mattes, to give retimed objects tight crisp edges and the latest version will detect and account for occluded regions of the image.

ReGrain is an advanced grain management tool, which duplicates grain either from a sample image or stock footage and applies it to a new sequence.

DirtRemoval automatically detects and cleans dirt, dust and hairs from a film scan.

MatchGrade copies the colour look from a reference sequence and applies this to the source image. This technique involves a non-linear transformation of the colour histogram and is useful for balancing and colour matching plates to the master grade.

MotionBlur utilizes advanced image processing to add organic looking motion blur to a sequence. Blur can be added automatically based on the amount of motion in the sequence of the shutter time can e set manually.

keylightThe Foundry Keylight, the Academy Award©-winning blue and green screen keyer is easy to use, and highly effective at tackling shots in which it is problematic to pull a clean key - particularly shots featuring hair, reflections and semi-transparent areas. Spill suppression is built-in, meaning that selection of the screen colour is often all that is needed for the user to pull a perfect matte and allow effects elements to be seamlessly seated together and to look genuinely photographed.

"Getting our hardcore tech into the hands of FCP users should be a real boost to what they can do," said Bruno Nicoletti, Chief Technology Officer. “Our engineers have worked brilliantly to build a superb range of effects and bring them to the wider market."

Keylight has an unparalleled pedigree, having been used on scores of feature films including: Speed Racer, King Kong, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Harry Potter series, Mission Impossible, Resident Evil, Sleepy Hollow, Chicken Run, The Truman Show, Armageddon and many, many more.

Its ease of use, and ability to tackle difficult footage via an array of built-in tools, has earned Keylight an enviable reputation, and established it as a favourite with visual effects facilities and artists across the world.

The collection is value-priced at $79.95.

"NewBlue Video Essentials is an incredible value, but don’t be fooled by its aggressive pricing," explains Paul Devermann, VP of Business Development. "This suite of video effects plugins offers critical tools to get the job done. Nowhere else will you find such a powerful set of truly useful tools for less than $100, much less $79.95."

  • Crop Borders, which quickly and easily eliminates unnecessary video borders.

  • Tint, which changes the coloring and light behavior of the video image. It provides control over the tinting, color saturation, brightness, and has the option of adding the lighting depth of film.

  • Video Tuneup, which combines four very useful image adjustment filters for quick and easy fine (or not so fine) tuning of the image.

IBC 2008: Day #1 of the Show

I didn't have to be to the show until the afternoon so I decided to walk there. It was about a 30 minute walk and I hauled my laptop there, which it turns out I didn't need. It rained on the walk but Amsterdam still seems very warm and muggy. The architecture here is just so fantastic.

The RAI is a very nice place, too, but modern in design, unlike most of the buildings in this area. The RAI is huge and has a bunch of smaller room (which are still very large). The Plug-in Pavilion is straight back in the front door, through room 1, room 6 then into room 7. It's kind of funny, at the front of the convention center everyone is wearing black suits and ties. By the time you get to the back, in room 7 where the video plug-in guys are, it's t-shirts, which suits me just fine, thank you.

This year the Plug-in Pavilion has Digieffects, Automatic Duck, Noise Industries and RE:Vision Effects. The booth is quite small and it's just a podium to show the product for each company and a couple of comfy couches. GenArts is at the end of the row and they have a larger booth. GridIron is also here and the Foundry and I stopped by and said hello. Adobe has a large booth but not nearly as large as their NAB booth. Avid is directly across from the plug-in pavilion and has a good sized booth.

The show was not all that busy, which surprised me a bit. Like I said though, we were so far in the back that many people are probably working their way up from the front of the convention center. They tell me the weekend will be very busy.

Enough about booths... Seems like a very well organized event.

After the show I met up with a bunch of the folks from the Plug-in Pavilion and GenArts and we ate at an Italian-ish place. The food was quite good. Everyone is so friendly here.

I know that was a hugely exciting update. I'll post some photos next time. :-)

Sunday is the FCP SuperMeet, which should be a load of fun.

IBC 2008: The Arrival in Amsterdam

Hello dear Toolfarm newsblog readers. I just wanted to let you know that I arrived safely in Amsterdam with only one very minor delay. The flight was very smooth and uneventful, except for the fact that the interactive console thingie in my row didn't work. I suppose it was a good thing because instead of watching Sex and The City and Scrubs re-runs, I slept a bit.

Anyone who knows me knows that I hate cabs and I will go out of my way to avoid taking them, so I opted for a train from the airport, then a tram, then a 10 block walk. Not so bad, especially after a long flight. I did run into Mark Coleran at the airport, who it turns out, was on the same flight as I was. You may know Mark from GridIron software or all of the awesome interface design work he's done for films. Just Google his name if you're curious. He's super talented.

I've brought my camera, charger, power converter, camera cable and so on, so expect some updates from IBC over the next 7 days. (Sorry, I haven't taken any photos yet!) I'll be helping out Red Giant at the FCP Supermeet and also working at the Digieffects booth at the show. If there's anything you believe that I MUST do while at IBC or while in Amsterdam, please post a comment here or email me at michele [at] toolfarm.com.

RE:Vision Effects releases Video Gogh 3

video goghVideo Gogh turns your videos into moving paintings, using RE:Vision Effects optical flow technology to move brush strokes without stuttering artifacts. Video Gogh 3 opens up other possibilities in motion graphic design by introducing the option for users to define their own brushes, which may be animated. Version 3 adds a substantial amount of new visual effects opportunities that many have requested over the years.

Some of the features include:

  • Three default brush styles included: Oily, Watercolor and Chalk.
  • Custom Brush Set (up to 10): now included is support for animated and custom brush sets. Users can supply custom brush images and for each select different render styles (including render directly as sprite).
  • A new "Non-Additive Blending" mode allows you to make properly semi-transparent layers.
  • Video Gogh 3 provides an option to paint over the original sequence to avoid holes in result.
  • The ability to clip to edges found in the original image is now an option allowing you to paint "tight" or "loose".
  • Users can now control separately the growth and death of brush strokes when they become too distant apart or too clustered.
  • A better technique has been introduced that performs much better when objects come into frame as a result of panning or other camera (or object) motion.
  • In previous versions the initial distribution of brush strokes was not properly randomized, causing brush strokes to appear located on a grid upon initialization. This is been corrected in version 3.
  • Users can now control the variability in brush stroke width (including choosing to have no randomness).
  • Motion can be calculated using an alternate clip. This is useful if the original clip has low contrast or is difficult to track. This feature is also useful to facilitate layering small regions of the image with the plugin.
  • External motion vectors (e.g., from Twixtor or your 3D system) are also supported.
  • Brush stroke orientation can now be specified using alternate images. In addition, direction maps (e.g., from a 3D system) may be used to control directions the brush strokes orientation.
  • 16 bpc channel image support for applications that support 16bpc for After Effects-compatible plugins.

Video Gogh 3 works in Combustion 3.0.4 and over, After Effects 5.0 and up on Windows, After Effects 7.0 and up on Mac, Final Cut Pro 5.1 and up, and Premiere Pro 1.0 and up on Windows and Premiere Pro CS3 and up on Mac. Fusion 5 32b is also now officially supported. It is planned that Video Gogh 3 will be available in our bundle for Quantel eQ systems available from Video Design Software. Video Gogh may also work in other After Effects-compatible applications; please test the demo before purchase.

Video Gogh 3 is $119.95 and the upgrade from previous versions is $39.95. As of today, our Effections bundles for After Effects, Combustion, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Fusion include Video Gogh 3. (Effections Plus Bundle for After Effects
