Ease and Wizz - AE Script and Expressions

Iam Haigh has created an AE script and Hi. I'm proud to announce Ease and Wizz! It's an After Effects script and a whole bunch of expressions - "the fruit of many, many hours trying to figure out how adapt Robert Penner's Flash-based easing equations to work as expressions in After Effects."

Ease and Wizz lets you use several kinds of easing (rather than just
"easy-ease") in a handy way: Expo, Circ, Quint, Quart, Quad, Sine

He also has included "Special effects" eases: Back, Bounce, Elastic

You can see the different types of easing here or in this really basic video that Ian made a while back.

You can download Ease and Wizz here. Ian explains that there are some rough edges, but he has been using it in a production environment for some time and have been pleased with it.

I welcome your feedback, and hope that you find it useful!

RE:Vision Effects releases ReelSmart Motion Blur v3.3, OpenFX version, with support for Nuke.

RevisionfxRE:Vision Effects announces the immediate availability of ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB) v.3.3, OpenFX (OFX) version. ReelSmart Motion Blur applies more natural-looking motion blur to a video sequence by automatically tracking every pixel. RE:Vision Effects' tracking technology is at the heart of ReelSmart Motion Blur, so there is no handwork involved. Users can add as little or as much blurring as is needed, and can even remove motion blur.

What's new in version 3.3?

  • This version adds support The Foundry's Nuke and Toxik 2008. The OFX version of RSMB continues to support Assimilate Scratch. Other OFX hosts will be added to the list of supported applications once they are verified to work properly.
  • With this release, the OFX version of RSMB now runs on Mac OS X, both 32 and 64 bit Linux, and continues to support for 32-bit Windows apps running on either 32-bit or 64-bit Win XP and Vista.
  • Floating licensing is also new to this version of RSMB for OFX. This is the first RE:Vision Effects product to offer a true floating licensing option. Cheaper node-locked licenses are still available.

RSMB as an OFX plugin product comes with 2 plugins:
  1. a plugin that automatically tracks every pixel in a sequence and blurs based on calculated motion. Some motion blur can also be removed. There is support for foreground and background separation using a specified matte for better tracking, when needed.
  2. a plugin that adds or removes motion blur using existing motion vectors sequences (such as those coming from a 3D renderer).

Both plugins take full advantage of multiprocessors, and support unclamped floating point image processing when supported by the host application.

RE:Vision Effects' motion vector format is supported by 3DStudio Max (as the Velocity Render Element), Cinema 4D, Iluminate Labs's Turtle, SiTex's Air via a renderman shader, XSI and Maya via a Mental Ray shader, RE:Vision Effects' Twixtor Motion Vector Create tool, and others. The various methods of retrieving motion vectors are documented on the FAQ section of our website.

  • The OFX version of RSMB is $189.95 for a full (GUI) node-locked license. Full (GUI) floating licenses are priced at $284.93.
  • Render-only licenses for applications that support background (non GUI) rendering are available. Node-locked render-only licenses are $44.95, and floating render-only licenses are 67.43. Render-only licenses only renders projects saved with a full license, so your site must have at least one full (GUI) license for a render-only license to be useful.
  • Volume discounts are available with a minimum purchase of 5 licenses.

RSMB continues to be supported in Adobe After Effects and Premiere, Apple Shake, Final Cut Pro, Motion (ppc only), BorisFX Red, Autodesk Combustion and Autodesk systems that support Sparks (Flame, Inferno, Smoke,...), Avid editing systems (Media Composer, Symphony,...), Softimage XSI, Quantel genQ, Eyeon Fusion and others.

Come by and get a demo in person at NAB, booth SL2128J, or download demo versions, example projects and movies, from the RE:Vision Effects website,

Sorenson Squeeze Tip

sorensonDave Armstrong, QA Lead, Sorenson Media Inc. had a good tip about Sorenson Squeeze in the last Sorenson Newsletter:

Have you ever needed to limit your output file size to a specified amount? Using our Constrain File Size preset option can help. The Constrain File Size option can be found in the upper right hand corner of the compression settings once you have applied a setting to your file. The key to using this feature to the best of its abilities is to just use it as a basic guide. When you type in the File Size limit you need, you will notice that the Audio/Video Data Rates update with it. So check the box for Constrain File Size, type the desired value, and uncheck the Constrain File Size box, you now have a base data rate that should put you close to your mark. This now gives you the added ability to tweak the Data Rates as you desire with the knowledge of what your Overall Data Rate should stay at.

Bias Ships Peak Pro 6

Powerful New Editing, Mastering & Sound Design Tools Plus Production Pack Dvd With Soundsoap Le, Reveal Le And More

biasMusikmesse Expo - Hall 5.1 B55 - Frankfurt, Germany - March 12, 2008 - BIAS, Inc. today announced it has begun shipping Peak Pro 6,a major new upgrade to the award-winning pro audio editing, processing, mastering and delivery software for Mac OS X. Peak Pro 6 offers many new features, including an enhanced playlist with advanced functionality including new cross-fade options and volume envelopes; new DSP sound design features; editing and delivery enhancements; user interface improvements; and much more.

"We're thrilled to release version 6 of Peak Pro," said Jason E. Davies, VP Sales & Marketing for BIAS, Inc. "Both existing Peak users and new customers will agree that adding Peak Pro 6 to their digital audio toolset offers even more features and benefits than ever before. Whether you need to record and master audio directly to CD, design sounds, sample libraries and loops, or save time processing and delivering high quality audio, Peak Pro 6 is a must-have companion for anyone working with digital audio on a Mac."

Advanced Playlist Editing & Mastering: Peak Pro 6 adds even more functionality to the already robust Peak Pro 5 playlist (which included CD-TEXT, PQ editing, ISRC codes, a DDP export option, and more). The Peak Pro 6 playlist is even more powerful and flexible with the addition of new, fully customizable real-time volume envelopes, sample level zooming and editing, overlap/gap or centered cross-fades for either mastering or "classical"/take style workflows, new navigation and audition controls and more. Ideal for editing complex musical takes, preparing tracks for commercial CD replication, or simply arranging sections of a remix, the new playlist in Peak Pro 6 is now even more powerful and optimized for the task.

Editing, Processing & Sound Design Power: Since its inception, Peak has offered a robust selection of on-board DSP, and BIAS has added more DSP processing, editing, and sound design features to the program with each new release. Peak Pro 6 continues this tradition with the addition of several new processing tools.

Perpetual Looper ensures perfect "beat free" sustained loops of single line instrument samples ideal for developing instrument sample libraries. Pitch Envelope allows pitch changes to be controlled via a user customizable envelope ideal for creating special pitch based effects over time. Convolve Envelope offers dynamic control over the amount of convolution being applied over time excellent for producing new sounds by mapping the harmonic spectrum of one file over another.

Voiceover Ducking analyzes amplitude of a voiceover and automatically adjusts volume of mixed background source perfect for quick Podcast production where a voiceover needs to be mixed with background music. Vbox Link offers a new cross-synthesis between virtual instruments, effects and live input with real-time mix, convolve, vocode, modulate, and magnitude multiply modes offering unparalleled special effects and processing. Change Duration now offers algorithm selection for optimizing results when adjusting audio speed/length while retaining pitch of solo vocals versus music mixes. Cache in RAM provides an ultra-fast editing option that stores audio in RAM avoiding disc access bottlenecks when working with large files and significantly increasing processing speed for many DSP operations.

Multiple Delivery Tools: Peak Pro is widely used to prepare files for CD, web, video, game consoles, and other delivery formats. Version 6 adds new export capabilities while streamlining integration between other applications. Enhanced PQ sheet/text export generates user configurable playlist reports complete with track durations, indexes, CD-TEXT, and notes that can be printed, saved as .pdf, or exported as tab delimited text to ensure accurate reproduction and organization of playlist data. iTunes integration Peak Pro 6 allows quick and easy export of playlist regions directly to iTunes while offering bi-directional drag-and-drop integration for individual songs and regions. Integrated Podcasting many Podcast producers already employ Peak for its arsenal of recording, editing and processing power. Podcasts can be authored and uploaded directly from Peak Pro 6 as RSS feeds without requiring a separate Podcasting application. Default Save As stores frequently used file type, bit depth, and compression settings in the Save As dialog. Metadata audio file support Peak Pro 6 offers comprehensive reading and writing of metadata (audio information stored within the file such as artist, title and SMPTE start time) for most major file types including Broadcast WAVE.

User Interface Enhancements: Peak Pro 6 sports a sleek new user interface design featuring a global contrast control, scroll bars, and buttons. New high-resolution logarithmic meters with user configurable standard calibrations feature prominently in the new transport, and "magnetic" windows now snap together for optimal screen management. The included new Vbox effects and instruments matrix offers additional preset viewing and selection controls plus MIDI channel assignments. Additionally, the playlist offers an improved cross-fade control area along with a new stereo view and user adjustable waveform to list view ratio.

Digieffects Ships Damage

damage boxCollection of four effects for "sabotaging your creativity"

Wilmington, NC - March 19, 2008 - Digieffects, a developer of popular software plug-ins for Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, and Autodesk Combustion today announced that it shipped Damage, a new set of plugins for video and film post production.

Digieffects Damage is a collection of four effects plugins designed for post production professionals who want to create an extensive variety of digital and/or analog defects/errors in your footage.

"We designed the Damage package to be the most comprehensive set of tools for creating images that look affected by digital or analog artifacts available." said Digieffects President, Robert Sharp. According to Sharp, Damage is a unique product in the marketplace. No other plugin collection is dedicated to 'damaging' a video project". Damage includes the following effects:

Blockade: Video acquired by low fidelity devices like cellular phones and PDAs is becoming more commonplace. Blockade makes your clip look like it is highly compressed and being transmitted through a very bandwidth-limited pipe. Essential for simulating internet based micro cam display or personal video communication.

Artifact: Developed to create digital defects, Artifact simulates lost DCT blocks and frame dropping, most often seen when a digital video file suffers from corruption or a satellite feed is hampered by weather. Make sure you warn clients and your house engineer that it's only an effect...

Interference: If it's television you want, traditionally you'll need some sort of interlaced field scanning. Interference creates the look of interlaced video fields, even on progressive footage or still images, adding noise, colorization and offset separately for each field.

Skew: The never-ending quest to aim the rabbit ears so that the television show looks as good once you're in your chair as it did when your hands were attached to the antenna is fast fading into the lore of old... That valuable (if under-appreciated) look is preserved in Skew. Uniquely analog/broadcast image badness like noise, image shearing, ghosts... it's all there.

Damage has a retail price of $99 and is available immediately from Digieffects and its resellers.

Digital Anarchy ToonIt updated to 1.1 with multiprocessor support

toonitFrom the DA Newsletter:

The Mac version is looking very good, but we're having a bit o' trouble with the Windows version. Those of you that emailed last month about the Windows version are still on our list. We just need to get a build that we think is stable enough to send out. No point in sending you software we know is going to cause a steady stream of errors. Sorry this has taken so long, but that's the way it goes with development sometimes.

HOWEVER... those of you with After Effects CS3 don't need to wait for the multi-processor version of ToonIt. AE's multi-processor support, the Render Frames Simultaneously checkbox in the Preferences, will usually supercede ToonIt's MP support anyways. So if you have enough RAM for AE to render multiple frames on each of your processors you're getting as good of performance from ToonIt as we'll be able to give you. Same goes for those of you using Nucleo Pro from Gridiron Software.

Note on CS3 multi-processing: It is something of a black art as to how you get AE to fully use all your processors. What is happening is there will be a separate instance of AE running on each processor. Thus, you will need enough memory for all those instances of AE. Playing around with the settings in the Memory & Cache preference section will determine how many additional processors are used by the Multi-processing preference section. You don't usually want the Memory & Cache set to the defaults if you have a multi-processor machine. Changing the memory usage to 50 or 60% will free up memory to be used by other instances of AE. Also, setting the cache to a low amount like 10% can also affect how many processors will be used. Of course, if you have a memory intensive project, say 4k comp with a ton of layers, setting your memory to 33% may not be a great idea. And you might want to wait until you're ready to render to change the cache settings, as a low setting will affect how much you can ram preview. As mentioned, it's a bit of a black art which I admit I don't fully understand, so don't take this as the definitive guide on AE multi-processor support. These are just things I've run into while fiddling with settings on the various dualcore and quadcore machines we have sitting around the office here at the Anarchy World HQ.

Psunami Water for FCP/Motion released (FxPlug version)

psunamiOne of Digital Anarchy's most popular plug-ins, Psunami Water, is now available for Final Cut Pro and Motion.

Psunami Water creates photorealistic water surfaces. The waves are true 3D, created by a 3D mesh that's rippled and distorted by water simulation algorithms. Since you're in a real 3D system, you can fly the camera around skimming across the waves or going beneath them to create underwater shots. Using the same technology that created the digital water in Titanic it's an incredibly powerful way of adding beautiful, realistic waves and water to your FCP and Motion projects.

The best part is that the AE purchase of Psunami Water includes the FxPlug version in the same package! Buy one, get both!

We'll have the system requirements up as soon as we get them, but for now, I think you'd be fine with an Intel based Mac with the most recent version of Final Cut Studio. I'll find out if it will run in older versions of FCS.

More on Boris Final Effects Complete FxPlug

BFECDownload the Boris FEC FxPlug for Final Cut Pro and Motion here. It's good for 15 days. It's (obviously) Mac only, but there is a version for After Effects and compatible also.

There are also many ways to buy FEC:

We're in the process of updating the FEC entry in our Plug-in Finder.
