CineForm Intermediate HD and 2K QuickTime Codecs Ship for Intel-Based Macs

cineformCross-Platform Support for Both Mac OS X and Windows Enables the Industry's First Practical Collaborative Workflow

August 28, 2007 - Source: Studio Daily - CineForm, Inc. today announced that QuickTime versions of its HD and 2K CineForm IntermediateTM codecs are shipping in production for Intel-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS X 10.4 or later. CineForm QuickTime movie files are now compatible on both Windows and Mac OS X computers. CineForm QuickTime files eliminate the need for massively large DPX files as a common exchange format between platforms, thus enabling the industry's first practical cross-platform and cross-application post-production workflow. Mac OS X software applications supported with the first production release include Adobe's CS3 Production Premium, Apple's Final Cut Pro, Motion, and QuickTime Player, Media 100, and Pomfort Silverstack. CineForm is also offering a free decoder for Intel-based Macs called Neo Player Mac.

"Adobe and CineForm have enjoyed working together for many years to optimize online digital workflows for independent filmmakers", said Simon Hayhurst, director of product management, Dynamic Media Organization for Adobe. "As the market expands, we're looking forward to collaborating with CineForm to enable the industry's most powerful cross-platform compatibility using CineForm Intermediate technologies within Adobe CS3 Production Premium". "The biggest workflow frustration expressed by our customers has been the lack of file compatibility between platforms," said David Taylor, CEO of CineForm, Inc. "Historically each platform has been an "island", inefficient for cross-platform project collaboration. With our CineForm Intermediate QuickTime codec for Mac, we're enthused to offer our customers a forward step towards simplifying collaborative digital workflows and reducing costs".

CineForm QuickTime Codec for Mac OS X
The CineForm QuickTime codec is now shipping with CineForm's Neo HD/2K and Prospect HD/2K products. The Neo and Prospect product families provide high-definition editing support for a broad range of industry post-production software, including from Adobe, Apple, Autodesk, Media 100, Sony, and others. Each product purchase provides both a Windows and Mac OS X activation emphasizing the new simplicity of cross-platform compatibility. CineForm's QuickTime codec supports digital workflows from standard definition all the way to 2048x2048, including the 12-bit CineForm 444 format suitable for film scanning, animation, and high-end compositing. CineForm's free Neo Player for Mac allows all users of Intel-based Macs to play CineForm QuickTime files within most Mac video applications, including Adobe CS3, Apple Final Cut Pro, and QuickTime player, regardless of whether the files were created on Windows or Mac.

Pricing and Availability
NEO HD/2K and Prospect HD/2K, which include the CineForm QuickTime codec for Mac OS X, are available for immediate purchase with a starting price of $599. Certain free upgrades and special pricing is available to existing CineForm customers. Neo Player for Mac is available as a free download from CineForm's website. Trapcode: 3D Stars

Ko Maruyama has a nice tutorial movie on extruding shapes into Trapcode Particular at Digital Producer.

Create an Animatic Slug with PowerProduction StoryBoard Artist

I'm on the board of my local MCAI chapter and I'm in charge of our November meeting. The topic is storyboarding and I'm going to be demoing PowerProduction StoryBoard Artist (unless someone from the company can demo it!) I saw a demo by Grant Carroll of Channel Wolves at a Motion Picture Collective meeting after NAB NY last year and it was really impressive to say the least.

Everyone's familiar with the storyboarding process as it relates to film production. It helps a producer and director bring a screenplay to life. But have you ever thought about how storyboarding could streamline editing and post-production? Imagine creating a visual outline to guide your editing, before you even start collecting footage. Imagine a full-length animatic, complete with music, right in your NLE timeline - to overlay footage onto, making constructing a scene a snap. Imagine creating animatic slug scenes from your own images or from a library of supplied images to round out your unfinished sequences.

All of this is possible using PowerProduction StoryBoard Artist. With Storyboard Artist, an editor no longer has to screen unfinished sequences with 'shot missing' or scene missing' slates. Instead the editor can create animatics to import into their NLE timeline.

CHV FxScript Plug-ins for Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express

We've just added tons of Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express Plug-ins from CHV. CHV plug-ins are da bomb. Seriously, they're quality... but they're really inexpensive. Okay, they're downright cheap!

The newly added plug-ins are FxScript, not FxPlug, meaning that they do not run in Motion, but they do run in FCP, including FCP 6, and FCE. Fx-Script is the most common plugin-interface for Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express. Perfect system integration and high quality results make Fx-Script plugins the perfect choice to enhance the capabilities of your video editing system. CHV was one of the first to offer a great variety of plugins for Final Cut Pro

All plug-ins are downloadable

Adobe Extends Web Video Leadership With H.264 Support

adobeHDTV Quality Web Video Reaches the Masses With Industry Standard Video Codec in Flash Player

San Jose, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Aug. 21, 2007 Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the latest update for Adobe® Flash® Player 9 software, code-named Moviestar, which includes H.264 standard video support -- the same standard deployed in Blu-Ray® and HD-DVD(R) high definition video players -- and High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) audio support, as well as hardware accelerated, multi-core enhanced full screen video playback. These advancements will extend Adobe's leadership position in Web video by enabling the delivery of HD television quality and premium audio content through the ubiquitous Adobe Flash Player and pave the way to expand rich media Flash experiences on the desktop and H.264 ready consumer devices. The latest update for Adobe Flash Player 9 will be available in beta for immediate download later today on Adobe Labs.

With H.264 encoding already available in Adobe Premiere® Pro and Adobe After Effects® software, H.264 playback is now enabled in Adobe Flash Player, and will be supported by the Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) and applications developed with Adobe AIR(TM) software, including Adobe Media Player(TM). Adobe AIR is a cross-operating system application runtime that enables developers to use their existing skills to build and deploy rich Internet applications to the desktop. The Adobe Media Player, which leverages Adobe's Emmy(R) Award winning Flash architecture, delivers engaging video experiences to viewers while offering content publishers new abilities to distribute, track and build businesses around their media assets.

"Adobe is committed to providing a seamless creation-to-playback solution that allows creatives and developers to produce video and rich-media once, and then deploy that content across the widest array of distribution and playback environments," said John Loiacono, senior vice president of Creative Solutions at Adobe. "Already a broadly adopted industry standard, the inclusion of the H.264 codec in Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR, the Creative Suite(R) product line, and the upcoming Adobe Media Player will accelerate customer workflows, enabling the creation and repurpose of high-quality Web video content without extra development costs."

Broader Reach for Video Consumers

Adobe Flash Player content reaches over 98 percent of Internet-enabled desktops, as well as a wide range of devices. Today, both live and on demand television shows are being delivered online with video that can be viewed using Adobe Flash Player, and the technology also powers the video capabilities of social networking sites such YouTube and MySpace. As Adobe expands Flash experiences outside the Web browser, content can be shared across different devices and people can get great video experiences on the video players of their choice, including the upcoming Adobe Media Player. Consumers can also stream user-generated content such as home movies from Adobe Premiere® Elements with Adobe Flash Player and play video movies on handheld, portable devices.

"MTV Networks has consistently led the industry in making its popular music, entertainment and comedy programming available everywhere so our audiences can stay in touch with all the great content they love from CMT, COMEDY CENTRAL, Logo, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike and VH1," said Nick Rockwell, senior vice president and chief technology officer for MTV Networks. "Flash is an important part of that strategy and Adobe's support of H.264 in Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR and the upcoming Adobe Media Player will ensure that we continue to deliver high-quality video to our diverse audiences who expect it."

Content developers can reduce the cost of encoding and preparing data for distribution with H.264 and HE-AAC support in Adobe Flash Player, since these standards are already integrated into their existing authoring workflows. In addition, Adobe is working with an ecosystem of video encoding partners to expand rich media Flash experiences that already support these standards.

The public beta version of the update to Adobe Flash Player 9 software, code-named Moviestar, which includes H.264 and HE-AAC functionality, will be available later today as a free download from Adobe Labs. The final release is expected to be available via update in the fall. Demonstrations of Adobe Flash(R) Media Server and Adobe Flash Media Encoder supporting the new codecs will be held during the IBC 2007 at the RAI Exhibition and Congress Center in Amsterdam, September 7- 11 (Stand 7.721) and again at the Adobe MAX conference in Chicago, which begins September 30th.

Digital Anarchy's ToonIt!

Chances are: You know Digital Anarchy. For many of us, the software that Jim Tierney provided was the only way that we could get the clients to say "Ahhhhhhh".

For me, it started with Psunami Water. A studio I worked for wanted some "watery" animation - and I suggested some "water-like" plug-in. They looked at it, we punched in some new values, and the resulting animation wrapped up an otherwise long project.

Before Text Tools in AE Text Anarchy was the only way we could make "THE MATRIX TEXT", and every animator knows there are clients who asked for it on everything (shudder).

Digital Anarchy has paved the way with a bunch of tools that make creating "what clients see and want" easier for animators. Now - another: TOONIT!

While I DO NOT SUGGEST that slapping this plug-in on video will make your footage of an intern in a red dress look like Jessica Rabbit - it is an excellent alternative to rotoscoping, posterization and stripping channels.

(Plus, I've already seen is used on-air in its "AS IS" condition, so somebody out there has already used its default settings as a solution).

Jim gave me (and others who started to crowd in around me) a demo of the software.

New Upresolution Plug-in for AE and PPRO

Check out SuperResolution from The Deemon, a new plug-in for Adobe After Effects 7 and Adobe Premiere Pro that uses super-resolution method to upsize video. It can be used to make HD videos from SD. The plug-in uses information from neighbor frames to upsize current frame. It accumulates information, so the more sequential frames are processed, the better quality you get. When it's first applied to a layer, it takes just a few frames preceding the current one.

super resolution

It's Windows only and hopefully we'll have a demo up on our Free Demos page soon.

Of course there is so much more that RE:Vision Effects does than this one plug-in, DE:Noise, but this is their latest plug-in and SIGGRAPH is the latest event.

While it's true that SIGGRAPH didn't officially see an Adobe booth this year - After Effects isn't the only host application for the software of the PLUGIN PAVILION. Autodesk was (and always is) a big draw for SIGGRAPH (now with mudbox too).

Todd kept busy showing off everything GenArts

Pierre kept people entertained with strange hand puppet shows and comedic songs.

Others strolled over specifically to say hello to Debbie

Professional Video Templates for After Effects: The Garden

The GardenValerio and Oreste have a new template called The Garden and it's gorgeous. It can be used as titles/credits for a television show or film or for a wedding video intro or for really anything you like. I volunteer at a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), handling the digital stuff, and this would be perfect for a video for the farm. You can swap out the images, titles, colors - anything. Own it! It's also very complex and a great learning tool for those who are into reverse-engineering comps. The comps are sized for HD (1920x1080) and SD NTSC and Pal.

Note: The Garden has been added to PVT's Bundle vol. 1. Get all PVT templates at a nice discount.

NewTek Delivers the Animate and Edit Bundle for 3D Artists

Special offer brings LightWave 3D® and SpeedEDITTM together for a limited time
Through October 31st buy LightWave and get SpeedEDIT FREE!

lightwave banner

San Diego, CA – SIGGRAPH – August 6, 2007 -- NewTek, Inc., manufacturer of industry-leading video and 3D animation products, today announced a limited time offer of world-class LightWave 3D with NewTek’s award-winning SpeedEDIT nonlinear editing system. The combination of these powerful applications provide the 3D artist with amazing resources to create stunning 3D animations, visual effects and short films with the ability to storyboard, edit and deliver their work in a multitude of formats. LightWave full units and upgrades for current LightWave owners will be bundled with SpeedEDIT beginning today through October 31, 2007, a savings of up to sixty percent.

LightWave 3D, a perennial favorite among Hollywood artists, provides the perfect combination of power, speed and value. LightWave is easy to learn and use and versatile enough for any application. Complete with modeling, rendering and animation LightWave is used extensively in broadcast television production, film visual effects, video game development, print graphics and visualization.

SpeedEDIT is a resolution-independent nonlinear editor designed to get results quickly for a full range of video editing projects from web streams to hi-definition. The storyboard-style interface provides an intuitive environment within which 3D artists can quickly develop a project from early sketches through animatics to final output. Simple cut to music capabilities in SpeedEDIT provide the ability for artists to quickly assemble dynamic, compelling presentation reels of their work.

"The beauty of LightWave with SpeedEDIT is how quickly I can take my concepts from animatics, to early un-textured previews to final output," said Don McCoy, 3D Artist, Area 51. "We worked on a project for NASCAR where we edited the basic LightWave elements in SpeedEDIT to give the client a preview of how it would look. They were so blown away by what we could produce so quickly we used SpeedEDIT throughout the entire project and made the final delivery of the short film animated entirely in LightWave and edited in SpeedEDIT."

SpeedEDIT allows quick editing of animated projects as the software sees tga32 sequences automatically, making it possible to simply drag the first frame of the series into the editor where SpeedEDIT sees it as a clip of the entire sequence. Frames can be previewed and rendered right from the SpeedEDIT Filebin in any one of the most popular formats. Developing an entire project from pre-visualization to final edit is simple and straightforward in SpeedEDIT where hand drawn storyboards including music and audio can be edited to provide the first level of animatic. These original illustrations can then be replaced with test renders and ultimately the final 3D renders simply by using the "Inherit" function in SpeedEDIT. SpeedEDIT can then render the completed project in any desired format for streaming to the client for approval or final delivery.

3D artists will also find SpeedEDIT the perfect solution for creating project demonstration reels. Markers are set in an audio clip to the beat of the music, add LightWave animation clips to the SpeedEDIT storyboard and select "Perform," the result is a project demonstration reel edited to music. The SpeedEDIT "Slip and Slide" editing capability allows for the adjustments of in and out points to select the elements of each sequence you desire.

Pricing and Availability
LightWave® v9 with SpeedEDIT is available starting today worldwide through October 31, 2007 at suggested retail price of $895US, a savings of $495US.  Registered owners of LightWave 3D® [8] or earlier are eligible to purchase an upgrade to LightWave v9 for $395US including SpeedEDIT, a savings of $495US.

Jeff Almasol has created some After Effects CS3 Scripts. They look SUPER useful.

This download contains scripts for editing keyboard shortcuts (KeyEd Up), launching scripts (Launch Pad), create project folder hierarchies (Folder Setup), converting Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ase) files (Swatch You Want, kuler Shapes), and modifying a comp's motion blur settings interactively (Active Shutter) in Adobe After Effects CS3. To use, unzip the archive and place the contents in the Scripts folder located within the Adobe After Effects CS3 folder (Mac OS) or its enclosed Support Files folder (Windows). Active Shutter, Folder Setup, Launch Pad, and Swatch You Want can also be used as dockable panels by placing the scripts (and associated .png files) in a ScriptUI Panels subfolder of the Scripts folder, and then choosing them from the application's Window menu.
