NAB's Greatest Kicks: AE CS3 Features

Bob Donlon's Adobe Digital Video Blog has a bunch of images from Steve Holmes AE CS3 presentation at NAB, which I was lucky enough to catch. This isn't exactly what I saw - I saw a demo of the puppet tool - but Bob walks you through the Auto-trace feature, Shape Layers and the Repeater. Fun stuff!

New Free Demos! CHV Plugins for Final Cut and Motion

intelfxplug

The free demo versions of CHV-Electronics plug-ins are now available at Toolfarm.com. Just visit our demo page to try them out. I demo'd them at NAB and these are some of my favorites. They are seriously fast and amazingly cool.

  • The Entire-Bundle 06-2006 for Final Cut Pro & Final Cut Express
  • FxPlug Bundle 04-2007 for Final Cut Pro & Motion
  • Shining FX Final Cut Pro & Motion
  • Morphing FX for Final Cut Pro & Motion
  • Magic 3D FX for Final Cut Pro & Motion

They're all updated for Intel (see: Mac Universal Binary) and all but a few are FxPlug.

Let's talk Maxon Cinema 4D, shall we?

Ko Maruyama has an article about Maxon at NAB, as well as a video with David Basulto interviewing Paul Babb, head honcho of Maxon. The video also shows some seriously cool animation. Check it out!

Paul Babb has been everywhere lately. He was interviewed on Plugged-In, the awesome new podcast presented by Toolfarm. Check Podcast #2 from NAB. His interview is first.

We do so love Cinema 4D. It plays so nice with After Effects! I'm not sure if you saw the script at AEnhancers.com which exports AE Camera Data to Cinema 4D. I haven't tried it out myself, but there was some buzz about it on the AE-List a few days ago.

Also, if you're new to Cinema 4D, there are some Tutorials for Cinema 4D in our Tutorials database.

They're very affordable and create mindblowing effects.... and did I mention how fast they are? They played REAL-TIME with keyed video and multiple effects in Motion 3.

boujou silver bullet and boujou bullet SD - more choice for professional Matchmovers

2d3

On May 1st 2007, 2d3 will be introducing two new additions to the boujou family of matchmoving products:

Derived directly from boujou 4, silver bullet and bullet SD share the same robust and accurate feature tracking and camera solving engines. 2d3 are meeting your needs by offering the automated power and ease of use of boujou across a wider price range.

silver bullet and bullet SD offer more functionality to more people than previous releases of bullet, while still providing the easy to learn, easy to use, single click, wizard based workflow of boujou bullet 2.

Both silver bullet and bullet SD offer major enhancements over previous versions of bullet while maintaining the same levels of automation and ease of use. With silver bullet and bullet SD you can still solve most shots in a single mouse click. But now you also have advanced tools at your fingertips which allow you to solve a wider range of more difficult shots more easily.

New features include

  • Access to a range of advanced parameters for feature tracking adjustment
  • The ability to create a solve for a sub range of frames.
  • Store multiple cameras solves in a single project.
  • Solve from free move shots of variable focal length
  • Focal length constraints
  • Full Timeline functionality
  • Orthographic 3D views.
  • Graph Display
  • Mesh generation and export
  • Floating Wizard and Timeline
  • Mask with holes
  • image proxies
  • Auto Radial distortion correction

The new bullet products share the same interface, which is common to boujou 4, so switching between packages is easier with no need to learn a new interface.

While silver bullet has the same, complete import and export range as boujou 4, bullet SD is designed for those who dont need HD support and have less demanding export requirements.

These new bullet products will replace bullet 2, which will no longer be available after the release silver bullet and bullet SD.

PRICING

boujou silver bullet - USD $5,000
boujou bullet SD - USD $1,000

Stockholm, Sweden, April 20, 2007 - Trapcode, developer of visual effects and motion graphics tools today announced that Peder Norrby of Trapcode is honored to present Ken Perlin the Trapcode Award of Excellence on Monday, April 23, 2007. NAB Wrap-Up: The Show... Well, my show anyway....

Michele at the apple booth, copyright apple inc. 2007 Well, it was a long and wonderful week at NAB. I worked on the show floor at the Apple booth. I had a primo spot on the corner of the massive booth, right in the center of all the traffic. Look, I made Apple.com!. (Photo courtesy of Apple.com).

At the Apple booth, I demo'd FxPlug Plug-ins for Motion and Final Cut Pro. I was using a lot of beta plug-ins on Motion 3, which is in beta. Oh, boy.... Motion 3! Now this product is something to get excited about! I've always been an After Effects evangelist, but Motion 3 is going to give AE a run for it's money. I don't think it will replace AE by any means, but let's just say that there is a new kid in town who can play previews real-time, intuitive 3D, mind-blowing tracking and matching (using Shake technology) and has an incredible number of plug-ins that are out or coming out soon for it. I have to admit that I've never really given Motion the chance it deserves, but it ROCKS. I admit, I love it. I'm a convert.

I plan to review some of the plug-ins that I demo'd in the next week or so. I am completely impressed with CHV-Electronics plug-ins. They play real-time and are extremely versatile. A lot of the developers stopped by my station throughout the week. I saw a lot of Christoph Vonhrein, of CHV. He demo'd his plug-ins and really was able to show me the cool things that they can do. They do some mind-boggling effects... with real-time previews. These are probably my favorite FxPlug plug-ins. I had so much fun with them.

The Noise Industries FxFactory also impresses me. Noise Industries took the 2007 Videography Vidy Awards at NAB. Yes, they're that good. If you're using Motion or Final Cut Pro, YOU NEED BOTH CHV plug-ins and FxFactory. It takes a lot to impress me... really it does. I'll get some samples up soon. I highly recommend both plug-in developers products. They're inexpensive and fast!

I showed Trapcode FxPlug betas of Shine, Starglow and 3D Stroke and on a beta of Motion 3. They are basically the same plug-in as their AE counterpart. They are CPU accelerated, as opposed to GPU accelerated like most FxPlug plug-ins, so they were running about 8 frames per second for previews on the dual Intel processor I was running (it had 8gb ram and an ATI Radeon 1900 card). Not real-time but pretty fast. They brought lots of oohs and aahs.Trapcode 3D Stroke in FxPlug is a little different than the AE version. There are no paths in FCP, so they have a work around. There are a ton of preset shapes, plus, Sean Safreed from Red Giant told me that the trick is to save an SVG file (vector file) and drop it into the FxPlug folder. It will then show up in the drop down menu. I didn't try this, of course, because I didn't have Illustrator installed, but it sounded pretty straight forward. The Trapcode plug-ins will ship in a month, when Final Cut Studio Ships.

Zaxwerks 3D Flag was running real-time previews in Motion 3 and people were really impressed with it. I've made curtains and clothes hanging on a clothesline with it. It's also inexpensive and has a good track record, so it's a great tool for the old Final Cut Studio arsenal.

On Wednesday morning of the show, Boris Yaminsky of Boris FX comes up to me and was asking me about their Boris Continuum Complete 5.0 FxPlug plug-ins, which I didn't have on my machine. He comes back 10 minutes later with a drive and gives me a personal 20 minute demo of some of their plug-ins. They're really pretty fast and ran well in Motion 3. They were not quite realtime, but ran about 10-12 frames per second in previews. Not too shabby. They have a really nice keyer. I didn't have the full set, only about 20 of the 180 or so plug-ins that will be shipping, but what I saw was very cool stuff indeed.

I showed DV Matte Blast from DvGarage, which Toolfarm doesn't sell, unfortuately. It's very fast... real-time! However, it doesn't have a lot of the bells and whistles of a more robust keyer. It does what it does well, but if you're looking for something with a light wrap, matte choker and so on, the Boris Continuum Complete Keyer was a really nice keyer. It got in nice and tight around hair and fingers on moving footage.

Another plug-in I didn't have was ToonIt! from Digital Anarchy. Marco from DA came over to my booth and installed it and gave me a quick tour and It totally gives the look of those Charles Schwab commercials. It does run really slowly, but it analyzes pixel by pixel so it's doing a lot of work. Also, it's still in beta, as is Motion 3. The look is perfect. They've got that nailed. I was using the ToonIt! Roto plug-in on some Ducati footage from Apple and it was impressive to say the least. Slow, but impressive. If you've tried to create this look on your own, it's not an easy task. I think ToonIt! is going to do very well in the plug-in marketplace.

Also, Marco from DA gave me a behind the scenes look at the Quartz Compositor and programming that goes into Plasma FX. That was really interesting. I had no idea what goes into the programming of plug-ins. I also had DA Plasma FX on my box, but unfortunately there was an old build installed, not to mention a beta of Motion 3 and things were not working as well as I would've liked.

The CHV, Noise Industries plug-ins and Zaxwerks 3D Flag are available now. The Boris, Red Giant, Trapcode, and Digital Anarchy plug-ins are shipping in a month or so.

Final Cut Server also took a few awards - Television Broadcast Top Innovation Award, Television Broadcast Top Innovation Award and the DV Black Diamond Award. I was so surprised to find out how many people are migrating from their Avids and are going to get Final Cut Server in their post houses.

They didn't show Shake there and several people asked me if Shake was EOL. Word on the street is that in 2008 a new version of Shake is going to blow all of our minds. Hold tight on that one.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended also won a Television Broadcast Top Innovation Award and a 2007 Videography Vidy Award and Adobe Soundbooth CS3 took a DV Black Diamond Award. Unfortunately, I didn't get to check out much of the Adobe stuff. I was at the Apple booth for the entire show. I did manage to see an hour long demo of the new features in AE CS3 and saw some great new features. The vanishing point feature looks really swell. The Beta of AE CS3 is now available here.

No, I didn't see the RED Camera, but there was so much buzz surrounding it. Everybody wants some.

I'll get some photos of the show, the parties and the people I met up this week. Our Podcast guys, Keith and Alan, did a knockout job and got interviews with Chris and Trish Meyer, Brian Maffitt, and so many other well known people in our little industry. They did the interviews at parties in the evening so everyone is relaxed and having fun. Keith played the Chris and Trish Meyer interview at the airport and it's a hoot. That Trish really dished it to Alan. I expect them to be up by Monday, after we've all had a chance to recover. Keith and Alan and I all flew out at 1am on the red eye last night. Alan and I were actually on the same flight. Anyway, I am totally looking forward to these podcasts from NAB.

NAB Update #1

I'm at the airport on my way to Vegas. I've chatted with several people who got there this weekend. I thought I'd share some NAB from my friend and fellow co-founder of WMAEUG, Matt Schirado:

I'm typing from the Las Vegas Convention Center, with a handy free WiFi site, and I'm dying to get into the exhibit space, but those pesky armed guards are keeping me out. I said "Hi" to Richard Harrington, editor of After Effects @ Work, which Michele (Yamazaki) contributed a chapter. He's one of the main presenters and organizers for the education track at NAB.

The hard-core training info begins tomorrow, and I'm going to miss the Apple Event and Avid's announcements on Sunday. No one's leaking information today.

Also seems that I could walk into a few of the Post Production World classes, and no one would notice. Only one security guard and the mail hall entrance, so it's like running from one movie theater to another. No one's checking.

I had no idea Matt was such a rebel! He also discussed the Keynote from Steve Rosenblum, the Blood Diamond Editor.

Good luck to all of you trying to leave the East Coast today. Looks like some nasty weather. Godspeed.

New Masking Tool from RE:Vision Effects to be shown at NAB

Pete Litwinowicz sent this little teaser to the AE-List today. RE:Vision Effects will be putting out a new plug-in for AE but he didn't divulge the name. Any guesses? I'm guessing RE:Masker.

The features:

  • Variable edge feathering using a second spline that controls the feather amount (the distance between the original mask and the feather mask controls the feather amount).
  • Uses AE's masks, so there is no new interface to learn
  • Better motion blur: this plugin will have the ability to use the motion
blur found in ReelSmart Motion Blur to blur the mask instead of AE's multiple-time sampling method. Note that this plugin uses the shutter angle and phase settings found in AE's advanced composition settings to perform the RSMB-style motion blur

Price: To be determined
Availability: To be determined, but the official answer is "soon". :-)
Compatibility: AE 6.5 or later

See it at booth SL3827A at NAB in Las Vegas next week.

Digital Film Tools AVX Plug-ins are now Universal

DFTMac UniversalDigital Film Tools has updated their AVX plug-ins to run natively on Intel-based Macs.

Digital Anarchy ToonIt!

Jim Tierney of Digital Anarchy Posted the following message to the AE-List:

Digital Anarchy are introducing a new plug-in at NAB called ToonIt!. As you might expect, it gives video various types of 'cartoon' looks, along with different edge styles (or Pen&Ink mode, which is just outlines). The plug-in does an excellent job of maintaining the fidelity of lines and color regions overtime, which is the usual downfall of most of the products that attempt to create toon-looks.

I think they've really caught the Waking Life look in the first example. Digital Anarchy will be at booth #SL3827E at NAB and showing ToonIt!

Magic Bullet's New Look: A sneak peek

mb suite boxYes, it appears that our news blog has become Red Giant and Boris central lately, but, hey, I go where the news is, you know.

Stu Maschewicz talks about the awesomeness of the new Red Giant Magic Bullet Suite in his ProLost Blog. I saw it in February, and I can attest, it's a totally sick piece of software, and that's sick in a great way.

Rather than a regular plug-in with a ton of sliders, Magic Bullet Looks features a standalone application with its own UI. Called Looks Builder, this application is launched when you apply the Look Suite 3 plug-in in After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Avid, or Motion. Within Looks Builder, you build and edit looks using Look Tools; modular mini-effects for things like bleach bypass, gradient filters, and film stock simulation. All of these tools work in realtime and can be tweaked and edited in context. All processing is done in floating-point color. With over 30 Look Tools to assemble however you like, you can create an infinite variety of Looks.

Check out Magic Bullet Suite in our Plug-in Finder. Of course, you can check out the new Magic Bullet at NAB. There's so much to see at NAB this year, isn't there!yes

Zaxwerks New Warp filters tour

yesAlan Shisko demos the new Zaxwerks plug-ins 3D Layer Warp. He gives a general tour of how it works. I need it! It looks so cool! He points out the good points and the problem points of the plug-in, so it's an unbiased opinion, which is great to hear. Alan has a really good delivery. I sat next to Alan at the Media Motion Ball last year. He's a really nice guy.

Watch the Zaxwerks 3D Layer and 3D Grid Warp tour (Quicktime). I'm guessing that they'll be available in a couple of weeks at NAB.
