Digital Anarchy Updates ReSizer 2.1 for Final Cut Pro and Motion

resizerDigital Anarchy, a leading provider of cost-effective vfx software for Adobe and Apple products, announced the immediate availability of the ReSizer 2.1 update. ReSizer is a plug-in for high quality scaling of footage or up-converting SD to HD. This gives designers and filmmakers the power to produce high quality SD to HD up-conversions while staying on time and within budget. The plug-in works in Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, and now natively in Apple's Final Cut Pro and Motion using Apple's FxPlug plug-in architecture.

ReSizer 2.1 has three scaling algorithms, which give users flexibility in finding the right method for specific footage. Users also have control over how much these algorithms sharpen or smooth the footage, allowing them to further tailor the options. ReSizer produces extraordinary results whether footage is being up-converted from SD to HD or zoomed in 800%, because of multiple methods available to accurately increase the resolution of the original image. This difference is particularly noticeable in ReSizer's ability to keep edges sharp and defined, with minimal aliasing (or “stair-stepping”) that is usually found in up-converted footage.

For working with SD interlaced footage, ReSizer 2.1 has a Deinterlacer that makes use of motion compensation. Multiple frames of interlaced footage are analyzed and the missing scan lines are intelligently reconstructed. This process produces greater fidelity to the original image. The combination of ReSizer 2.1's smart algorithms and de-interlacing technology makes for unsurpassed quality when increasing the resolution of video, film or even web podcasts.

Helpful features in ReSizer 2.1 include:

  • New: Apple FxPlug Architecture: ReSizer 2.1 runs natively in FCP and Motion using Apple’s new plug-in architecture.
  • New: Increased Speed: ReSizer 2.1 is 2 to 3 times faster in FCP than version 2.0
  • User Interface Specific to FCP: The user interface for Final Cut Pro has been modified to better fit FCP's workflow and allow editors to work more efficiently.
  • Improved Algorithms: The best algorithms from ReSizer 1.0 were improved, making the UI easier to use and produces better results.
  • Deinterlacer: A built-in Deinterlacer uses time estimation to analyze multiple frames and produce a detailed progressive frame from the interlaced footage.
  • Resolution Presets: Common HD and film resolutions are included in a Preset Manager, making it easier to incorporate into a busy workflow.
  • Pixel Dimensions: Users can now specify the exact dimensions they want the footage to be, instead of fiddling with percentage sliders.
  • Improved Fine-Tuning Controls: Easily adjust the scaled output by modifying the algorithm parameters, making it easier to customize ReSizer for specific footage.

Regularly priced at $149, ReSizer 2.1 will be available for $99 through Nov. 10. Current ReSizer 1.0 customers can upgrade to version 2.1 for $99, on sale for $79 through Nov. 10. The 2.1 update is free for current ReSizer 2.0 owners; customers should contact Digital Anarchy for update instructions.

ReSizer works in After Effects 5.0 and higher, Final Cut Pro 4.0 and higher, Motion 2.0 and Premiere Pro 2.0. The plug-in runs on all variants of Macintosh OS X and Windows 98ME-XP Pro. Demo filters and samples are available at the Digital Anarchy website.

ReelSmart Motion Blur updated to version 3.2.4

Re:Vision Effects has fixed a problem where ReelSmart Motion Blur 3.x and RSMB Pro 3.x plugins may not produce frame, may inappropriately stop a render, or even crash within After Effects 7.0 when the layer had AE's Time Remapping, Time Stretch, Time-Reverse Layer or Freeze Frame applied.

They've also fixed a problem where a red frame might flash when interactively scrubbing along the timeline within AE 7.0.

The update is free to previous licensees of version 3 of ReelSmart Motion Blur.

broadcastGEMs ships AE HDPro Series and HDPro Series

broadcastGEMsbroadcastGEMs, the leading provider of customizable animated backgrounds and elements announced that it has begun shipping its AE HDPro and HDPro Series products. Priced at US$579 and US$429 respectively, these products provide the highest quality broadcast animated backgrounds in the industry. These products are designed by producers who know what it takes to make a background work under the client-from-hell conditions.

Instead of taking days to complete an animated background or even outsourcing the job, editors will be able to make use of the huge number of footage to create their own designs within hours.

The HDPro is targetted towards video editors who need to turn around great-looking motion backgrounds in double quick time. The product includes backgrounds, lower-thirds, animated elements, seamless textures, stills, vector artwork.

The AE HDPro is targetted towards Adobe After Effects users as it includes project files in Adobe After Effects 6.5. There are close to 200 footage elements in the product.

The animated sequences come in two flavours of 1920x1080 - TIFF sequences rendered at 59.94 frames per second and QuickTime movies rendered at 29.97 frames per second. With minor, non-destructive tweaking the sequences can be made compatible with all PAL and NTSC HD formats.

Pricing includes an external 250GB Western Digital MyBook Essential USB drive.

Digital Anarchy Releases Microcosm Codec 1.2 for Universal Mac Support

microcosmDigital Anarchy, a leading provider of cost-effective graphics software, today announced the release of a Universal build for their Microcosm Codec. Microcosm is a 16-bit, lossless codec that achieves incredible compression ratios while maintaining absolute image fidelity. The codec supports alpha channels and works in all QuickTime-based applications, including After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and Avid. This new release adds compatibility for all host software running on Macintosh-Intel systems natively or through Rosetta.

Microcosm 1.2 will optimize footage to save drive space, averaging over 6:1, while maintaining perfect image quality. This performance solves two workflow problems for professional broadcast designers, editors, and producers. Microcosm is unmatched as an intermediate codec that moves work between applications without bloating file size. Additionally, Microcosm offers a great way to archive work while maintaining the footage's original integrity.

Move Footage Losslessly Between Applications And Locations
Graphics companies are now working with projects that have a high bit depth, are saved in HD, or require high quality images from capture to output. A big challenge presented by this workflow is moving footage cleanly and quickly between applications without degradation in image quality. Lossless formats like the Animation codec are popular for moving footage and CG elements between applications and locations; however, the files tend to be extremely large, which slows production and drives up storage space.

Microcosm is a lossless, 16-bit solution for these intermediate renders. On average, it offers a 3-to-1 compression ratio over the Animation codec and 6-to-1 over uncompressed footage. Designers and editors using Microcosm can still get the absolute image fidelity that is the trademark of lossless, 16-bit compression, but without the usual gigabyte file size. By dramatically reducing file size, Microcosm makes it easier to get files from application to application, machine to machine, or to people working remotely without the slightest loss of quality.

Stefan Tapper of Staromedia in Germany says, "We use Microcosm for proxies and pre-compositing (video with alpha channel that replaces the composition) to speed up the workflow with complex animations. We used to do this with the lossless Animation codec from Apple. But the hard drive space needed for that kind of video exceeds any acceptable amounts after a while."

Save Time and Space While Archiving
Because the codec saves files that are lossless and small, Microcosm also offers a great way to archive footage. To avoid image degradation, graphics professionals archive their files with little or no compression. Microcosm keeps that image quality while reducing the storage space needed to archive projects or make backups.

John Osteen of Dastardly Studios in California says, "For a guerilla filmmaker and freelance graphic artist, filling up your hard drives is a frustrating situation, and you don't always have the finances to keep buying hard drives with every project... Fortunately, it's something I no longer worry about, since I know Microcosm will increase my hard drive 'mileage' so to speak. I'd have to say the $99 I paid for Microcosm has saved me over $1000 a year in hard drives."

Some of the features in Microcosm include:

  • Macintosh-Intel Support: Now supports Intel Mac well as Macintosh PPC and Windows.
  • 16-bit and 8-bit Support: Amazing compression ratios are found at both bit depths.
  • Alpha Channel Support: Supports full 64-bit and 32-bit color images.
  • Variable Compression: Microcosm analyzes footage using different methods to get more optimized, tailored compression.
  • 6:1, Lossless Compression: An average of 3:1 compression over other common lossless codecs.
  • Free Decompressor: Users can encode files using Microcosm and send to other users, who only need to download the free decoder to view and open.

Pricing and Availability
Microcosm 1.2 is now available for Mac OS X and Windows. This purchase provides the encoder and decoder, and includes a license for both Macintosh and Windows. Version 1.2 is free for existing Microcosm owners; customers should contact Digital Anarchy for update instructions. All users can download the free decoder for files compressed with Microcosm at

Microcosm requires QuickTime 5.0 or later and will run on any PowerMac or Pentium computer. The codec works in Adobe After Effects xx and higher, Final Cut Pro xx and higher, Adobe Premiere Pro xx, most versions of Avid, and any other application that supports QuickTime. The codec run on all variants of Mac OS X and Windows 98ME-XP Pro. A demo version, workflow benchmarks, and additional support statistics are available at www.digitalanarchy.com

RE:Vision Effects releases RE:Map 1.1!

Re:Vision Effects RE:MapRE:Vision Effects announces the release of RE:Map 1.1, an update to the ultimate kit of mapping and distortion tools introduced earlier this year.

New to RE:Map 1.1:

  • Floating point image support within After Effects 7.0.
  • An additional plugin, RE:Map Inverse UV, has been added. This new plugin takes a UV Map and a color image that matches the UV Map, and inversely projects the color image to a rectangular image. In this way users can paint or edit an image on a rendered 3D object directly and use the resultant inversely-projected texture for an entire animation using RE:Map UV or the 3D system.

RE:Map continues to provide the following 4 other plugins:

  • RE:Map UV takes a UV Map, probably rendered from a 3D system, and renders an image using this mapping. Easily clean up texture maps and remap in post without having to go back to your 3D system for re-rendering. In addition, this plugin allows you you to come up with cool 2D and 3D animated texture map templates and reuse them over again with different image sequences.
  • RE:Map Distort takes a color image and automatically distorts the image based on the features for a caricature-like effect.
  • RE:Map Displace warps an image with a user-supplied displacement map. This plugin has more control and options than other displacement map filters, including robust anti-aliasing and advanced displacement vector controls.
  • RE:Map Planar maps or inverse maps a perspective plane defined by 4 points (also known as corner-pinning and inverse-corner-pinning).

RE:Map is an After Effects-compatible plug-in set, and is available for Autodesk combustion, eyeon software's Fusion, Adobe After Effects and Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Motion, generationQ (via Synapse) and other applications that support After Effects-compatible plugins. RE:Map Distort and RE:Map Planar work in all the listed applications. RE:Map Displace, RE:Map UV and RE:Map Inverse UV are recommended for use only within applications that support 16 bits-per-channel or floating point projects, such as the Pro version of After Effects, combustion and Fusion.

The upgrade is free for those who purchased version 1.0.

Availability and pricing:
The RE:Map plug-in set is priced at $149.95 . Render-only licenses: $29.95.
Not all features are available from within all host applications, see the RE:Vision Effects website for details.
RE:Map has also been incorporated into Effections, and Effections Plus, our bundled collections.
Volume discounts available. Contact sales@revisionfx.com.

Demo material, examples and software are available at http://www.revisionfx.com.

RE:Map is a trademark of RE:Vision Effects, Inc. Other trademarks are owned by their respective owners. Features, pricing and availability are subject to change without notice.

Maxon Adds Depth to Body Paint's Robust Tool Set

body paintOn the eve of its 20th anniversary, MAXON is pleased to announce the upcoming availability of BodyPaint 3D Release 3. With this powerful new release, MAXON expands its multi award-winning 3D painting and UV editing software to include breathtaking 16 and 32 bit image manipulation capabilities, as well as UV LSCM Pelt mapping and several other key advancements. Improved features and continued integration with Maya, 3ds Max, SoftImage, and LightWave converge to push BodyPaint 3D forward as an indispensable tool for artists everywhere.

MAXON, October 4, 2006 - More than ever before, BodyPaint 3D R3 enables artists to achieve incredible textural subtlety with 16 and 32 bit depth painting. This makes it possible to create softer gradations with a palette that can comfortably hold an extreme range of contrasts with intricate detail. The enhanced functionality delivers an ideal solution for working with HDRI files such as .HDR and .EXR in the immediate context of the 3D scene.

With BodyPaint 3D R3, artists can eliminate much of the difficulty and tedium of unwrapping UV coordinates from complex meshes by using LCSM mapping. Improved Relax UV algorithms elegantly interpret the full range of geometric object curvatures into UV maps that are ready to paint on. Added tools such as path selection make it possible to select seams and refine a UV mesh with ease.

BodyPaint 3D R3 also provides flexibility with direct Projection Painting exchange to Photoshop. To aid in resolution depth and consistency, new tools allow users to change the pixel aspect ratio and freeze view to the desired resolution.

In addition, BodyPaint 3D has inherited the features from its sister application, CINEMA 4D to become a complete modeling, painting and UV editing solution.

Maxon's Cinema 4D Scores a Perfect 10

cinema 4DOn the eve of its 20th anniversary, MAXON is pleased to announce the upcoming availability of CINEMA 4D Release 10. With this landmark release, MAXON has enhanced its flagship 3D modeling, animation and rendering software to build upon a reputation for ease of use with countless workflow improvements, as well as new functionality to aid in character animation, and much more.

MAXON, October 4, 2006 - Release 10 features enhanced object and animation managers, which have been optimized for quicker workflow. Objects can now be easily filtered, searched, bookmarked and arranged in layers to aid in dealing with large scenes. A completely rewritten timeline can be organized in the same way as the Object Manager, and now offers ripple and region editing tools as well as improved automatic and manual controls over keyframe interpolation. A new PowerSlider allows extensive control over animation without the need to open the timeline. Enhanced support for the OpenGL features of newer graphics cards, as well as a new interactive render region, aid users in visualizing the final results of their work prior to the final render. The interface itself has been given a facelift as well, with the inclusion of new schemes and icons.

The advances in scene management will be especially helpful in character animation, the major focus of Release 10. Character animators will enjoy a new comprehensive toolset in the MOCCA module, offering joint-based skeletons with improved IK setup and solutions. Skin deformations allow the user to apply the entire animation from one skeleton to virtually any mesh. Automatic weighting saves time while binding joints to the mesh, and new weighting tools make it easy to adjust or manually weight each joint to the mesh. An extensive morph management system makes lip-syncing and facial animation simple, and the new MOCCA toolset also provides muscular deformation based on the animation of joints. Finally, the VAMP tool simply transfers morphs, UV coordinates, weighting, selections and vertex maps between objects of different topologies.

Every license of CINEMA 4D Release 10 now includes the functionality formerly available as the optional BodyPaint 3D module. This powerful toolset provides artists with unmatched UV editing and 3D painting tools.
